Back biting is the biggest sin

By: Ayatullah al-Uzma Nasir Makarim Shirazi from ‘Tafsir i-Namunah’
Translated from Farsi into English by Fatima Zabeth Beenesh

1- The complete and multifaceted social peace
The six commands that defined in the above two aayaat are (the prevention from mocking, criticising, calling bad names, to suspect others in an evil manner, inquisitiveness and backbiting) when this prevention implemented among the people completely, the people’s dignity and self-esteem in every way will be secured. No person to achieve the self-pride can make others a means of his entertainment and mock them. He has no right to open his mouth to criticise this and that person and cannot call others with the bad titles and degrade their status. Even he has no right to think suspiciously into the life and matters of others and he has no right to enquire in the life of others and cannot disclose their hidden defects as well.
In other words the human being has four assets and all of them must be protected in the fort of this law and be saved they are the lives, wealth, the respect of one’s own family women and honour.
The terms of the above aayaat and the Islamic narrations illustrates that the honour and the status of the people is similar to their wealth and live but at times it is more important too.
Islam wants the peace should be prevail in the Islamic community, not only people practically but even verbally and also by their opinions, they should be in peace and tranquillity. And who ever feels that the other person in his thoughts aims the arrows of accusations at him and this peace is acknowledged as of uppermost level, which is impossible except in the religious and faithful society.
The great prophet peace be upon him in a hadis said: the merciful God made illegal (haram) the intrusion in the life, wealth and honour of others and same way to think ruthlessly regarding the others.
A suspicious eye not only effects the status and prestige of a man but for the person who is committing it, brings a great disaster as it causes to make him aloof and cut his cooperative relations with the people and create for him a horrible world filled with unfriendliness and aloofness. Hence in a hadis the amirul mominin Ali alaihis salam said: the person who think for others suspiciously, he fears and terrifies with everybody.
In other words the thing which separates the human life with the animal life and gives him prosperity, uplift his efforts to perfection, it is a spirit of cooperation and operating with a group of people. And it is possible when the trust and the optimism rules over the people, whereas the suspicion dissolves and shakes the foundation of this trust, destroy the social spirit and the life-force of cooperation.
It is not only the suspicion but also the inquisitiveness and the backbiting is the same.
The pessimistic people are always indulged in fright. And they have fear with everybody. an endless anxieties permanently dominate upon them. They cannot find any friend, companion and sympathizer nor any partner or co-operator for social activities and any associate and supporter for the days of helplessness.
It is necessary to keep this point in mind also, here by suspicion it means the unreasonable suppositions. Therefore in some cases the supposition is based upon some reason that is the reliable reason and in this order it is exceptional, similarly as the witness attained by two just people.

2- Do not be inquisitive
As we find the noble Quran clearly prevented the inquisitiveness in the above ayat and as it is not limited to any conditions, it indicated that inquisitiveness in the affairs of others and getting impatience to open their secrets is a sin. But certainly the evidences that exist in and out of the aayaat are showing that this command is related to the personal and private life of the people and regarding the social life, until it has no effect in the outcome of the people, this order is correct.
But it is obvious that this matter related with the fate of the people in society has a different aspect. Hence the prophet peace be upon him appointed the agents to recollect the information they are called by the term ‘the eyes’ to evoke whatever happenings concerning the relations and the destiny, inside or outside the Islamic society.
Besides this reason the Islamic government can maintain agents of information or it can establish the vast organisations to recollect the information. And where there is fear of conspiracies against Islam and it is going to put to risk the social peace, the Islamic government can even rise to be inquisitive in such a manner that it can be able to search in their houses too and even they can make enquiry in their personal lives.
But this matter must not turn out to be an excuse for breaking the sanctity of this pure Islamic law. They are the people, for the issue of conspiracy and the violation of peace allows themselves to attack the personal life of the people and open their letters, and control their telephones and in any hour of the day or night can rush to their houses.
In short the margin between the inquisitiveness and to acquire the needed information to protect the peace of society is very delicate and minute. And the duty of the people’s administrative department is to strictly protect this boundary to save the sanctity of the people’s secret and the peace of the Islamic society must not be put to risk.

1- Back biting is the biggest sin
As we told human life’s great wealth is his status and person. And to put it into to risk is equal to put his life into risk. But sometimes terrorising any personality is more serious than terrorising his person. Here sometimes its sin is heavier then killing a person.
One of the philosophies of the preventions of backbiting is to protect the wealth and status of man from getting destroyed. And the sanctity of the people must not get ruined. Their position must not get stained. The Islam considered this subject very much important.
Another point is that back biting and suspicion create the weak social relations, destroys the wealth of trust and shakes the base of mutual aid and cooperation.
We are well aware that Islam believes very much in unity and reliability in the Islamic society and its solidarity, whatever strengthens its unity, Islam wholeheartedly welcomes it and whatever weakens it, Islam abhors it.
Apart from that the back biting spreads the seeds of enmity and hatred in the hearts and at times it causes bloody fights, murders and killings .In short if Islam counts the back biting one of the biggest sin it is for its ill effects that inflicts upon the person and the society.
In the Islamic narrations there are many shocking terms in this subject. We will bring an example of it below: The great prophet of Islam peace be upon him said: a single penny which a human being earns from the money of interest is a sin and it is equal to 36 times committing the adultery (zina). And the esteem of a Muslim is more important than a single interest.
This comparison is for the purpose that as much as the adultery is obscene and ugly it has an aspect of “haqullah” the right of mighty Allah but usury (extortion of interest) is worse than that, to dishonour the esteem of people by means of backbiting and some other mean. It has the aspect of the right of the people.
In another hadis it is described, once the prophet peace be upon him gave the speech in a very loud voice and shouted: O group of people who brought the faith verbally, not whole heartedly! Do not commit the backbiting behind the people and do not be inquisitive to search the defects of people. As the one who searches in the secret matters of his Islamic brother, the almighty God reveals his secrets and degrade him in his own house.
In another hadis it is narrated: the benevolent God inspired the prophet Musa (Moses) alaihis salam and said: the one who died after the repentance of his commitment in the backbiting. He is the last person who enters the heaven. And the person who is adamant in the committing the back biting, he is the first person who enters the hellfire.
In a narration by the prophet peace be upon him we read: the religion of Islam defined the effects of back biting is much faster than the leprosy. This comparison shows that backbiting is similar to the leprosy that eats the body and decays it same way it quickly destroys the faith of a man. Keeping in the mind that the acts that motivates the backbiting are the affairs like jealousy, proud, miserliness, hatred (malice), monopolization and they are ugly and unacceptable. It got cleared now, why the backbiting and destroying the prestige and respect of a Muslims destroys the faith (point to be noted).
There are a number of narrations existed in this field, by narrating another hadis we bring an end to the discussion of this subject. Imam Sadiq alaihis salam said: the one who quotes the words for a believer, to destroy his prestige in the eyes of the people. The mighty God brings him out of his province and ends him into the province of shaitan (Satan).
All these shocking terms and expressions are for the purpose that the Islam believes in the protection of social prestige and status of the believers. The backbiting left the destructive effects in the social unity, the mutual trust and the attachment among the people’s hearts. The most worse act is the back biting which causes to catch the fire of hatred, enmity, disharmony and the spread of prostitution in the social grounds because when the hidden secrets of the individuals gets evident by means of backbiting then the significance of sin becomes wiped out and getting polluted to it becomes easy.

4- The concept of back biting
Back bite as by its name, it is evident that to speak in the absence of any person .But the words reveals the defects of that person, Whether this defect is physical or moral in his behaviour or in his words even the matter that is concerned to him like his dress, house, spouse or his children.
Therefore if anyone expresses regarding the external and visible qualities, it is not called back biting. But if he has the intention of criticism and condemnation then in this case it is haram (prohibited). For example if he says for the criticism, that the man is blind or short in height or dark in colour or thin.
Like this manner the expression of the hidden defects for any intention, it is haram (prohibited). The description of the visible defects for the intention of condemnation of a person too is prohibited, whether we estimate it in the impression of back biting or not.
All these things are in the case when this quality exists in the said person. But the quality which does not exist in the person will be counted as the accusation. Its sin will be much heavier.
In a hadis from imam Sadiq alaihis salam we read: the backbiting are the words, one speaks about one own Muslim brother which the mighty God concealed it. But the thing which is visible such as bad temper and haste does not count in the backbiting. But defamation is the act about a person which this person does not possess.
Here it is obvious that the vulgar pretexts that some people bring for the backbiting it is not heard, for example sometimes the person who is back biting says this is not backbiting, it is his quality! While if it is not his quality then it is a blame, it is not a back biting.
Despite he says: these are the words I say before him as well. While telling at the face of that person is not only reduces the sin of backbiting but for the harassment he creates the heavier sin.

5- The cure of back biting and its repentance
The backbiting like the many others, increase the qualities that gradually turns into a disease. In such a manner that the backbiter enjoys his act, as much as he is destroying the status of others he feels contented and pleased. And this is the most hazardous stage of the morality.
Here before anything the backbiter must find the inner motives to cure the back biting that are present in his depth and inspires him to do this sin. Its motives are miserliness, jealousy, hatred, enmity and pride.
Then to repent his sin whereas the backbiting has the aspect of the people’s right, if the backbiter is in the reach of the person upon whom he committed the backbiting, not creating any fresh problem, he apologize him though secretly. For example he should say: sometimes as I was not aware, I expressed some thing about you, please excuse me and do not explain more. It must not cause a fresh deterioration.

The exceptional cases
The last words about the back biting is that the law of backbiting is similar to every other law has some exceptions for example some times for taking the opinion in the selection of life partner or the business partner a person wants to enquire regarding somebody to know more about that person. To trust in the opinion is the indisputable Islamic law. It requires that if he knows anything bad about that person he must reveal it to save a Muslim from getting caught in the trap. This type of backbiting committing with the good intention is not prevented (haram).
Same way in the other occasions that have important purpose such as seeking the opinion in the affairs for the protection of the rights
Of course who commits the sins openly this person is out of the discussion in this subject. And if his sin is stated in his absence he has no objection. But this point must be taken into the mind that these sins are evident sins.
This fact is significant that back biting is not only prevented (haram) but also to hear it as well is disallowed and to be present in the social gathering where the backbiting is going around that is similarly outlawed (haram). Of course according to some of the narrations it is obligatory upon the Muslims to reject the backbiting. That means to rise up in defence against the backbiting. How beautiful is the society in which these moral rules are perfectly implemented.

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáäøóÇÓõ ÅöäøóÇ ÎóáóÞúäóÇßõã ãøöä ÐóßóÑò æóÃõäËóì æóÌóÚóáúäóÇßõãú ÔõÚõæÈðÇ æóÞóÈóÇÆöáó áöÊóÚóÇÑóÝõæÇ Åöäøó ÃóßúÑóãóßõãú ÚöäÏó Çááøóåö ÃóÊúÞóÇßõãú Åöäøó Çááøóåó Úóáöíãñ ÎóÈöíÑñ (49:13
)
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is all Knowing and all-aware.

Piety, the valuable human possession
The past aayaat was addressing the believers; they were addressed as íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂãóäõæÇú in the numerous aayaat and in the various aayaat is the definition about forewarning the society of believers and prevented them.
However the ayat under discussion addressed the entire human society and defined the most important principle which is the guarantor of the discipline and stability and specified upon the weighing scale of real human values against the pseudo and false values.
And said: O people we created you from one man and woman and made you of different colours and the communities to recognize each other.

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáäøóÇÓõ ÅöäøóÇ ÎóáóÞúäóÇßõã ãøöä ÐóßóÑò æóÃõäËóì æóÌóÚóáúäóÇßõãú ÔõÚõæÈðÇ æóÞóÈóÇÆöáó

As the creation of people from one man and woman turns towards the Adam and the Eves therefore as all are from the one root so it is ridiculous to get full of pride upon each other on their exalted status by means of community and parentage. And the mighty God had created for every community a specification. It is for the safety of the discipline in social life. As these differences causes the identifications and without identifying the people the discipline is unable to succeed upon the society. Because whenever all the people become similar to one another, great chaos will prevail upon the entire society.
ÔõÚõæÈðÇ means a outsized group of people and for the term ÞóÈóÇÆöá the interpreters put forward many guesses.
A group of them defined the circle of ÔõÚõæÈðÇ is wider from the circle of ÞóÈóÇÆöá. Today the term ÔõÚõæÈðÇ is defined as a nation.
Some believe ÔõÚõæÈðÇ as the community of non-Arabs and ÞóÈóÇÆöá as the community of Arab.
And finally some others thought it is appropriate to the relation of man to the geographical regions and the term ÞóÈóÇÆöá is linked to different blood relations and races. But the first notion is proper to all.
However the noble Quran after devaluing the biggest means of pride of the period of ignorance that is tribe and ancestry, proceeds towards the real standard and said: the most respectable among you near the merciful God is the most pious among you.
Åöäøó ÃóßúÑóãóßõãú ÚöäÏó Çááøóåö ÃóÊúÞóÇßõãú

Like this manner drew a red line upon the external and materialistic privileges and gives the status to the matter of piety and the fear towards the mighty god and said: to get near the God and for the nearness of his sacred realm there is no other inspiring privilege beside piety. Since the piety is the spiritual and inner quality that before everything must be established in the heart and soul of man possibly it has more pretenders and less practicing people. In the end of the ayat it adds: The god is wise and well-aware.
Åöäøó Çááøóåó Úóáöíãñ ÎóÈöíÑñ

He is well aware of the pious people. He knows the status of their piety, purity of their sincerity and intention. He loves them according to their knowledge and rewards them and he is well aware of the false pretenders and punishes them.
The point:

1-The real values and the false values
Certainly every man naturally wants to be the valuable and honourable creature, for this reason he whole heartedly struggles to gain all these standards.
But to identify the status of the values by the difference in the cultures is not the same. And sometimes the false values take the place of the real values.
Certain people feel their real value is in their tribe’s origin of recognition and good standard. Hence they always struggle for the glorification of their status. By glorifying it and getting related to it they can make themselves great.
Specifically among the ignorant tribe the glorification of the community and their origin was the most popular superstitious glorification. To that extent that every tribe assumed itself greater and every race assumed itself more outstanding which unfortunately still exist the remnants of its deposits in the depth of their soul in the most of the nations and the people.
Another group thinks the wealth, villa, servants, followers and the matters like that are signs of the standard and always struggle to gain it. Whereas the other group counts the high social and political standard is the standard of the personality.
But as much as these affairs are shaken out of the nature, materialistic and transient and the heavenly rule like the Islam never compromises with each other hence it has to be devalued and the real value of human being are his natural qualities specifically piety, devotion, commitment and purity even the important subjects like knowledge and awareness if not used in the way of the faith and moral beliefs, it is of no value.
It is strange that the noble Quran was presented in the environment in which the value of the tribe was counted as the most important significance. But this self-made idol was broken down. And made the man free of the bonds of blood, tribe, colour, race, affluence, position and wealth and guided him towards his inner self and the elevated abilities.
Interestingly in the definitions of all about its descent (shan e nuzul) that is described in this ayat there are points existed that describes the depth of this subject. Such as after the victory of Mecca, the great prophet peace be upon him ordered the Muslims to say azan, a call for prayers. Bilal went up the roof top of the kaaba and declared the azan. Aqab bin Aseed who was among those who were liberated said: I am thankful to benevolent God, my father is dead and did not saw this day! Haris bin Hashsham also said: does not the messenger of God peace be upon him found anybody else other than this black crow. (The above ayat descended and stated the genuine standard).
Some others defined: this ayat descended when the messenger of God peace be upon him ordered to give a girl in marriage to the mavali ãæÇáí (the slave who is liberated or a non-Arab). They got astonished and said: O prophet of Allah do you say that we give our daughter in marriage to mavali ãæÇáí. This ayat descended and devalued this ideology.
In a hadis we read: One day the prophet peace be upon him addressed the people of mecca and said: O people the merciful God wiped away the shame of the ignorance, the displaying of pride upon the forefathers. The people are no more than two groups. One is righteous and pious and valuable near the Almighty and another is an impious, cruel who is mean before the merciful God. All the people are the children of Adam alaihis salam. And the almighty Allah created the Adam A.S. by soil therefore he said: O people I created you from one man and woman. And establish you in tribes for your recognition. The dearest among you is the one who is the most pious; the God is wise and well aware.
In the book of “ Adabun Nufus’of Tabari it is written that the prophet peace be upon him on the days of “tashreeq” (the day 11, 12 and 13 of zilhaj) on the land of mina when he was mounted on the camel, turned towards the people and said: O people be aware ! Your God is one and your father is one, the Arab has no superiority over Non-Arab or the Non-Arab has any superiority over Arab, neither a black over a brown skin man or any brown skin man over black but only by piety. Do I completely submit to you the divine command of Allah, the Almighty?
All of them replied: Yes. He said: the people who are present here convey these words to the people who are absent.
In another narration in the short and meaningful words are quoted by his Excellency, who said: the mighty God never sees your family condition and genealogy, nor your physiques or wealth but He only sights your hearts. The one who have the pious heart the merciful God pours his kindness upon that person. You all are the children of Prophet Adam alaihis salam. The most loved one among you near the Almighty god is the one who is pious.
It is very strange that in spite of all these vast rich and full of yield preaching still among the Muslims there are the people who rely upon the issue of race, blood and language and even think their unity is prior to the Islamic brother hood and religious unity. They once again made alive the partiality of the ignorant period, in spite of facing the heavy blows in this pathway as if they do not want to get awake and turn towards the rules of Islam. May the mighty God save all of us from the evils of the ignorant prejudices amen.
Islam fought back with the every face of prejudice of the ignorant period and wanted to assemble the Muslims of the world related to every race, nation and tribe under the single flag. Not the flag of nationality and race neither any other than that. As Islam never accepts these limited and narrow views and believes in all that, false and baseless believes even in a hadis it is related that the prophet peace be upon him defined regarding the prejudice of the period of ignorance and said: leave this act, it is a stinking object.
But why this stinking object is much-loved by a large number of the people who outwardly boasts themselves being the followers of noble Quran and the supporters of the Muslim brother hood? It is unknown.
How beautiful is the society which is founded upon the grounds of the Islamic standards.
And the false values of race, wealth and geographical regions and classes must be dropped out. Yeah the divine piety and the inner feelings of the responsibility, resisting the passions, remaining upon the truth, correctness, purity, rightness and justice are only the valuable human standards not the other things. Though in the present world’s society with disturbed passageways have forgotten these pure values and they are replaced by the false values.
In the system of social standards of ignorant period the values were rotating upon the centre of the rivalling with others in glory, ancestors, wealth and offspring and rearing a hand full of thieves and plunderers. However by changing this system and the revival of this clean and well-known verse:
Åöäøó ÃóßúÑóãóßõãú ÚöäÏó Çááøóåö ÃóÊúÞóÇßõãú

This verse achieved its yield such as Salman Farsi, Abuzar Gaffari, Ammar Yasir and Miqdaad.
The thing which is important in the revolution of the human societies, a revolution in the system of values and refreshing this base is the original Islamic base.
We end this discussion by a hadees by the great prophet where he said: all of you are the children of Adam alaihis salam and he is created by dust and avoid the glorification of the forefathers else you will become inferior than the insects plunging in the filth.

The truth of piety
As we saw the noble Quran placed the highest privilege for the piety and calculates it the only standard for the measuring the human values.
At another place considered piety the best baggage and the offspring for the judgment day.
Al-Baqara (The Cow)
(2:197)

æóÊóÒóæøóÏõæÇú ÝóÅöäøó ÎóíúÑó ÇáÒøóÇÏö ÇáÊøóÞúæóì

At some different place revealed that the attire of piety is the best attire for the human being.
Al-A'raf (The Heights)
íóÇ Èóäöí ÂÏóãó ÞóÏú ÃóäÒóáúäóÇ Úóáóíúßõãú áöÈóÇÓðÇ íõæóÇÑöí ÓóæúÁóÇÊößõãú æóÑöíÔðÇ æóáöÈóÇÓõ ÇáÊøóÞúæóìó Ðóáößó ÎóíúÑñ Ðóáößó ãöäú ÂíóÇÊö Çááøåö áóÚóáøóåõãú íóÐøóßøóÑõæäó (7:26
)
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember. (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth).
In the various aayaat it is defined that one of the first principle of invitation of the prophets was the piety and at another places the importance of this subject is brought to such extent that the Almighty placed himself among the pious
Al-Muddaththir (The One Enveloped)
æóãóÇ íóÐúßõÑõæäó ÅöáøóÇ Ãóä íóÔóÇÁ Çááøóåõ åõæó Ãóåúáõ ÇáÊøóÞúæóì æóÃóåúáõ ÇáúãóÛúÝöÑóÉö (74:56
)
And they will not receive admonition except that Allah wills. He (Allah) is among those who are pious and He is adequate for [granting] the forgiveness.
The noble Quran thinks the piety is the divine light, wherever it is established it generates the knowledge.
Al-Baqara (The Cow)
æóÇÊøóÞõæÇú Çááøåó æóíõÚóáøöãõßõãõ Çááøåõ

2:282 So be afraid of Allah; and Allah teaches you.
And considered the piety and big-heartedness are near to each other.
Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread)
æóÊóÚóÇæóäõæÇú Úóáóì ÇáúÈÑøö æóÇáÊøóÞúæóì

5:2 And help one another in righteousness and piety.
And defined the justice near to the piety.
Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread)
ÇÚúÏöáõæÇú åõæó ÃóÞúÑóÈõ áöáÊøóÞúæóì

5:8 Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.
Now we have to see that why the noble Quran has given so much importance to the matter of piety, this biggest spiritual wealth and the man’s most important honour with so many privileges.
The praiseworthy Quran has so many indications which unveil the facts of piety. In the various aayaat the heart is named in the place of piety. Said likewise: Al-Hujurat (The Dwellings)
Åöäøó ÇáøóÐöíäó íóÛõÖøõæäó ÃóÕúæóÇÊóåõãú ÚöäÏó ÑóÓõæáö Çááøóåö ÃõæúáóÆößó ÇáøóÐöíäó ÇãúÊóÍóäó Çááøóåõ ÞõáõæÈóåõãú áöáÊøóÞúæóì áóåõã ãøóÛúÝöÑóÉñ æóÃóÌúÑñ ÚóÙöíãñ (49:3
)
49:3 - Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.
The admirable Quran defined the piety reverse to the ill character as it is said in the 8th ayat of the Sura e Shams.
Ash-Shams (The Sun)
ÝóÃóáúåóãóåóÇ ÝõÌõæÑóåóÇ æóÊóÞúæóÇåóÇ (91:8
)
Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;
Quran counts any act which is practised by the source of sincere spirit, faith and clean intention it is based upon piety. Hence in the ayat 108 of sura e Tauba about the Quba mosque it is told: At-Tauba (The Repentance)
áÇó ÊóÞõãú Ýöíåö ÃóÈóÏðÇ áøóãóÓúÌöÏñ ÃõÓøöÓó Úóáóì ÇáÊøóÞúæóì ãöäú Ãóæøóáö íóæúãò ÃóÍóÞøõ Ãóä ÊóÞõæãó Ýöíåö Ýöíåö ÑöÌóÇáñ íõÍöÈøõæäó Ãóä íóÊóØóåøóÑõæÇú æóÇááøåõ íõÍöÈøõ ÇáúãõØøóåøöÑöíäó (9:108
)
Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.
The mosque which is from the day first erected upon the foundation of the piety is more worthy to perform prayers.
From the total aayaat it is evident that the piety is the same feeling of responsibility and commitment that after the firmness of faith in the heart rules over the existence of man and prevents him to reach the evils and sins and invites towards the righteousness, cleanness and justice. Purifies the human acts and washes the impurities from his intentions.
When we turn towards the roots of its literary meaning, we reach the result that the piety means the realities of the struggle in protecting something. And such circumstances, to protect the life and spirituality from the contaminations and centralize the powers in the affairs which attracts the fondness of the Almighty God.
Some of the elders believe for the piety there are three stages.
1- To protect the soul from the eternal punishment by means of acquiring the right faith.
2- To avoid every type of sin whether it is leaving the obligatory act and the sinful act.
3- To protect his character before the heart’s inclinations that overcomes the man to abandon the truth.
Ameeral momineen Ali alaihis salam possess the evident and alive terms relating the piety in the Nahjul Balagha. And he emphasised upon the piety, the issue upon which the divine leader in most of his speeches, letters and short sayings stressed abundantly upon.
At one place compared the piety with the sins and the contaminations and expressed: be aware the sins are the unruly carriages upon which the sinner’s rides and their reins are destroyed and topple them down the pit of the hell.
But piety is the calm and comforting horse, its master mounts holds the bridle and carries on till they reach the heaven.
According to this delicate comparison the piety is the state of self-worth, self-control and to govern over passions whereas impiety is to submit to the rebellious passions and to leave every type of control over them.
In another place maula Ali a.s. expressed: be aware the piety of the people is a unconquerable strong fort which the sins and the bad deeds are the weak boundary which does not protect its dwellers from the disasters, one who takes refuge in it he is totally unprotected. Be aware! by means of piety only the human being is secure only by the harms of the sins.
And again at another place adds: grab the divine piety which is the strong rope, the durable handle and a safe refuge.
Amidst these entire expressions the truth and the soul of piety is quite evident.
This point too is essential to be reminded that the piety is the fruit of the tree of faith. Therefore to gain this great wealth, the foundation of the faith must be made strong.
Practicing the responsibilities, avoiding the sins, turning towards the moral programmes made the piety strong in inner self. As the result the light of the piety and remarkable believe appears in the existence of man. As much as the piety increases the light of the certainty rises as well. Hence it is counted in the Islamic narrations that the piety is one degree higher than the belief and one degree lower than the certainty.
Imam Ali ibn Musar Reza alaihis salam said: the believe is one degree higher than the Islam and the piety is one degree higher than believe and one degree lower than the certainty. Nothing is distributed among the people like certainty.
This discussion will bring to end by the translation of famous verses which defines the facts of piety with the clear example.
1- Leaving the small and big sins is the piety.
2- Be like the person who is passing from the ground of thorns, holding his dress in such a manner that the thorns must not catch the skirt and continuously careful all about around.
3- Do not neglect the small sins, as the big mountains are erected by the small pebbles.
