4. Safiyyah daughter of Shaiba quotes: A'isha said: The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) left the house in the morning, cloaked in a woolen garment of black hair. Then al-Hasan ibn Ali (A.S.) came in and the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) placed him under the cloak.
After that al-Husayn ibn-Ali (A.S.) arrived and the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) covered him with his cloak too. Then Fatima (A.S.) came in and the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) placed her too in the cloak, and finally Ali (A.S.) arrived and joined his family under the cloak.
Then the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) recited the ayah "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification".

O Allah! They are my household, so keep away any abomination from them and make them completely pure. O Allah! Protect them and be on their side and assist them and make them honorable and do not make them despised and be my vicegerent among them, for thou art all-powerful over everything.

Once when the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) returned from battle, Fatima (A.S.) had formerly hung a curtain over her room's door and had ornamented al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.) with two silver bracelets. This time the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) did not go to visit Fatima (A.S.). Prompting her to think that the things he had seen actually averted him from going to her house; so she tore off the curtain and took the bracelet away from the two children to break between them. The two ran crying to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), who took the bracelets from them and called Thawban to go and give these to such and such a family living in Madinah. I do not like that my family use up their good wealth in their worldly life. O Thawban! Buy for my daughter, Fatima, a necklace made of 'asab' and two ivory Bracelets.
Jabir ibn Abd Allah
12. Ibn Abi Atiq quoted Jabir ibn Abd Allah as saying The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) called Fatima(A.S.), Ali(A.S.), and their two sons and put his cloak on them, saying: O Allah! These are [members of] my household, these are my household.

He said: No, I swear by Allah; many a time a woman lives for a while with a man then gets her divorce and goes back to her father and folks. His (the Holy Prophet's) Ahl al-Bayt(A.S.) are his roots and his group are those to whom granting alms is forbidden.

Then the Holy Prophet of Allah (S.A.W.) turned toward us, and said: You are on the right path. Amr ibn Maymun says: They started to talk and we did not know what they were saying. We saw him (Ibn Abbas) coming while shaking down his clothes saying: Fie! And hundred of woes to those who speak ill one who has over ten merits which nobody possesses except him; they taunt someone about whom the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) has said:
I will sent a man whom Allah never makes shamefaced, he loves Allah and His Apostle-proceeding to the point where he said-and the Apostle of Allah(S.A.W.)took off his own mantle and put it on Ali(A.S.), Fatima(A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.),and al-Husayn(A.S.) saying: "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification".
19. Said ibn Musayyib quoting ibn Abbas: One day the Apostle of Allah
(S.A.W.) was sitting while Ali (A.S.). Fatima (A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.)wee with him. Then the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: O Allah! You know these are my Ahl al-Bayt, and they are the most honorable to me. Love whoever loves them and detest those who hate them; accompany whoever accompanies them and be hostile to those who are their enemies; and assist whoever assists them, and keep them away from any impurity, make them infallible of any sins and reinforce them with your Holy Spirit. Then he raised his hand toward sky and prayed: O Allah! You be my witness that I love everyone who loves them and I hate anyone who hates them; I will be in peace with anyone who is in peace with them, and I will fight the one who fights them and will be enemy to the one who is their enemy and will be a companion to the one who accompanies them.
20. Ibn Abbas in a hadith about the marriage of Fatima (A.S.) and Ali(A.S.): The Apostle of Allah(S.A.W.) embraced them and prayed: "O Allah! These are mine and I am theirs; as you kept away from me any abomination and purified me, O Allah! Purify them too.

Was revealed in Umm Salama's house where the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) called Fatima(A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.), and al-Husayn(A.S.) and covered them with a cloak and took Ali(A.S.) who was behind him under the clock too. Then prayed: O Lord! These are my Ahl al-Bayt, so keep them away from any abomination and make them pure and spotless. Umm Salama Said: O Messenger of Allah! Do I too belong to them? The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: You have your own status and are on the right path.
Umar Ibn al-Khattab
22. Isa ibn Abd Allah ibn Malik quoting Umar ibn al-Khattab: I heard from the Apostle of Allah (S.A.W.) who said: O people! I am your pioneer and you will reach me by the pond of Kawthar; a pond which extends from San'a to Busra and there are as many silver goblets as the number of stars; when you reach me, I will ask you about the Thaqalayn, so look how you will act a successors to me in these two.
The larger string [weight] is the Book of Allah whose one end is in Allah's Hand and the other is in your hand; hence cling to it and do not change [It means don't choose anything instead of it!] My Itrat [household] are truly my Ahl al-Bayt about whom the All-Knowing and Benevolent Allah has made me aware that these two [the Qur'an and the Itrat] will never get detached unit they join me at the pond of Kawthar. I asked him: O Rasul Allah! Who are your Itrat? He replied: My Ahl al-Bayt from the children of Ali (A.S.), Fatima (A.S.) and nine of their progeny from al-Husayn (A.S.) who are virtuous Imams who are my Itrat and belong to my flesh and blood.
Wathila ibn Asqa

The Messenger of Allah(S.A.W.) called al-Hasan (A.S.), al-Husayn(A.S.) and seated them both on his knees and drew Fatima(A.S.) and her spouse to his sides and covered them with a garment and said: "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you(with) a thorough purification".
Then he said: These are indeed my Ahl al-Bayt, O Allah! My Ahl al-Bayt are more deserving.
24. Abu Ammar Shaddad quoting Wathila ibn Asqa: The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) seated Ali(A.S.) on his right, Fatima(A.S.) on his left, and al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.) before himself and spread a mantle over them, Saying: O Lord! These are my Ahl al-Bayt and my Ahl al-Bayt have come toward you, not toward Fire.
Ahl al-Bayt and the Concept of Ahl al-Bayt
25. Al-Imam Ali(A.S.): The Holy Prophet of Islam(S.A.W) laid down and had me, my wife Fatima(A.S.) and my two sons al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.)lay down as well and spread a striped mantle over us and the following verse was revealed about us: "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of)uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification(33:33).
Jibrail(A.S.) then said: Am I with you too? So Jibrail (A.S.) was the sixth among us.
26. Al-Imam al-Hasan(A.S.): When the ayah Tathir was revealed the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) gathered us under a Kahybari robe which belonged to Umm Salama and prayed to Allah: O Lord! These are my Ahl al-Bayt and Itrat, so keep off from them every kind of uncleanness and make them quite pure and immaculate.
27. Upon martyrdom of al-Imam Ali (A.S.), Al-Imam al-Hasan said in a sermon following praise of Allah: I am the son of a man of glad tiding and warning; the son of one who calls to Him by His permission. I am the son of that luminous lamp; I belong to a household to whom Jibra'il (A.S.) descended and from whom ascended. I belong to a household whom Allah has kept off from them every kind of uncleanness and made them pure and immaculate.
28. Al-Imam al-Husayn (A.S.) said: - in a debate between him and Marwan ibn Hakam-: Get away from me that you are vile and we are a household of purity and cleanliness about whom Allah has revealed the ayah: "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification."
29. Musa ibn Abd Rabbih said: I heard from al-Husayn ibn Ali (A.S.) in the Masjid al-Nabi during the lifetime of his father Ali(A.S.) who said: Behold! My Ahl al-Bayt are admonishers to you, so love them to acquire my love and cling to them to avoid going astray. He was asked: Who are our Ahl al-Bayt, O Rasul Allah? He Said: Ali (A.S), two of my grandsons and nine of al-Husayn's progeny who al-Bayt and Itrat and are of my own flesh and blood.
30. Abu Nuim quoting a group accompanying the captives of Karbala: When we arrived in Damascus, the women and the captives were brought in at daytime without the veil on their faces. The stone-hearted Shamis (Syrians) said: We have not seen such noble captives; who are you? Sukayana, daughter of Al-Husayn said: We are the captives of Muhammad's (S.A.W.) household. They were kept on the platform of the mosque where captives are kept, among whom was Ali ibn al-Husayn(A.S.) who was a youth at that time. A man from among the Syrians stepped forward and said: I praise Allah who slayed and annihilated you and uprooted the tree of sedition. When he stopped his talk, Ali ibn al-Husayn (A.S.) told him: Have you read Allah's Book? The man said yes.The Imam (A.S.) ask: Have you read the verse "No reward do I ask of you for this except the love of those near of kin"? He answered yes. His Holiness said: we are them [the family]. Then he asked the man: Have you read the verse "And render to the kindred their due right"? He said yes. His Holiness (S.A.) said: We are them too. Then he added: Have you read the verse, "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification." He answered: Yes. Imam said:
We are them.
At this moment the Syrian raised his hands toward the sky and said: O Allah! I repent at your threshold (thrice); I disassociate from the enemies and the killers of Muhammad's (S.A.W.) household at your threshold; I had read the Qur'an but not until today had I found out these facts.
31. Abul Jarud quoting al-Imam al-Baqir (A.S.) of Tathir "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification."
This ayah has been revealed concerning Holy Prophet of Allah(S.A.W.) Ali ibn Abi Talib (A.S.), Fatima(A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.), and al-Husayn(A.S.). This ayah was revealed in Umm Salama's house where the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) called Ali(A.S.), Fatima(A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.), and al-Husayn(A.S.) and spread a Khaybari robe over them, went under the robe with them, and then said: O Lord!
These are members of my Ahl al-Bayt about whom you promised to keep off all abomination from them. O Lord! Keep off any abomination from them and make them pure and immaculate. This ayah was revealed. Umm Salama said: Am I as among them O Rasul Allah? The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said glad tidings to you O Umm Salama! You are on the path of righteousness.
Abul Jarud quoting Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn (A.S.) has said: The ignorant among the people suppose that in this ayah Allah means the prophet's spouses. They have lied and committed a sin. If Allah had meant prophet's spouses, He would have said: "To remove all abomination from you (women) and make you (woman) pure and spotless", and the addressees would have been female, as is evident in these verses: "And recite what is rehearsed to you in your homes, of the Signs of Allah and His wisdom"; And make not a dazzling display", "You are not like any of (other) woman".
32. Al-Imam al-Sadiq(A.S.) quoting the Holy Prophet of Allah(S.A.W.)through his forefathers(A.S.): I leave among you two weighty things as reminders: The Book of Allah and my Itrat, i.e., my Ahl al-Bayt.
These two will never separate until they arrive upon me at the Fountain of Kawthar, Just like these two - Putting his two forefingers side by side to exemplify being close together-. Jabir ibn Abd Allah Ansari rose to his feet and said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are your Itrat? He answered: Ali (A.S.),al-Hasan(A.S.), al-Husayn(A.S.) and the Imams from among al-Husayn's progeny unitl the Day of Resurrection.
33. Al-Imam al-Sadiq(A.S.) said in a lengthy hadith: What was meant by the verse: "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification", is Ali(A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.), al-Husayn(A.S.) and Fatima(A.S.) The Holy Prophet of Allah(S.A.W.) put them under a robe in Umm Salama's house and then said; O Allah! Every prophet has a family and a precious treasure and these are my Ahl al-Bayt and precious treasure. Umm Salama said: Am I of your Ahl al-Bayt? The Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) said: You are on the path of righteousness, but my Ahl al-Bayt and precious treasure are these.
34. Al-Rayyan ibn al-Salt relates: Imam Reza (A.S.) was present in Ma'mun's assembly in Marv. A group from Iraq and Khorasan were gathered there.....Ma'mun asked: Who are the pure Itrat? Al-Imam al-Reza (A.S.) replied: Those whom God has described in His Book with these words: "Verily, Allah intends to keep off from you (every kind of) uncleanness, O you the people of the house, and purify you (with) a thorough purification", and those about whom the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: I leave among you two weighty things as reminder; the Book of Allah and my Itrat who are my Ahl al-Bayt.
These two will not separate until they join me by the Fountain of Kawthar. Look how you succeed me in treating these two. Do not teach them, for they are wiser you.
The scholars (present in the assembly) said: O Abu al-Hasan! Tell us about Itrat. Are they among the Al [progeny] or apart from them? Al-Imam al-Reza (A.S.) said: They are the Al. The scholars said: But it is quoted from the Prophet (S.A.W.) as saying: My Ummah are my Al.And his companions have said in an off-quoted tradition which can not be rejected (for it is narrated by many) that Al-i Muhammad (S.A.W.) and his Ummah are the same.
Al-Imam al-Reza (A.S.) said: Tell me if giving alms to Al is unlawful. They said: Yes. His Holiness (A.S.) said: Then it should be so to the Ummah too. They said: No. Al-Imam (A.S.) said: Here lies the difference between Al and Ummah.
