Jesus (A.S.): Messenger of Allah

Compiled by: Ramineh Rezazadeh
“When the angels said, ‘O Mariam ! surely Allah gives you good news with a Word from him (of one) whose name is Messiah, Jesus son of Mariam , worthy of regard in this world and the hereafter and of those who are made near (to Allah).” (Chapter Al-e Imran, Verse 45)
Jesus (AS) is referred to as a word, the manifestation of God’s miracle and in another chapter as a spirit from God which is transferred to the womb of Mariam (SA). It becomes interestingly clear that the self-preparations which Mariam (SA) was asked to make were for the entrance of this word into her womb. In fact it may be indicative of the truth that she isn’t only carrying Jesus (AS), but his message and Prophethood as well.
In this relation it must be noted that the Qur’an specifically mentions Mariam (SA) and Jesus (AS) together, Jesus (AS), son of Mariam (SA), is the usual terminology applied in more than 28 cases out of 33 in the Book.
“And We made the son of Mary in his mother as a sign....” (23:50)
Or,
“And she who guarded her chastity so We breathed into her of Our inspiration, and made her and her son a sign for the nations.” (21:91).
These verses demonstrate that Mariam (SA) probably had attained a position equal to that of the major Prophets (AS), only she wasn’t endowed with the responsibility of bringing forth and inviting people to the new faith.
The Qur’an also asserts that the blessings given to Jesus (AS) were given to Mariam (SA) as well. Another verse explicitly states this matter:
“When Allah will say, ‘O Jesus son of Mariam! Remember My favor on you and on your mother, when I strengthened you with the holy Spirit, you spoke to the people in cradle and when of old age and when I taught you the Book and wisdom and the Torah and Evangel...” (5:110)
This may be one reason why the people of that time mistakenly considered Jesus (AS) and his mother [Mariam (SA)] to have a Godly-position.
Jesus (AS) speaks out upon the signal of Mariam (SA), not to outrightly defend his mother but to bring forth the message that he must convey which will undoubtedly justify the position of his mother.
In this concise statement Jesus (AS) points to three major issues which are the basics of social order. Prayer is the bridge between man and God, and this spiritual connection is essential for the moral and psychological well-being of the society. He next refers to charity, which is indicative of economic justice and social cooperation. Finally he mentions the importance of safeguarding the role and status of the mother as the cherisher of the family.

The Miracles of Jesus (AS):
Some Qur’anic commentators said that Jesus (AS) brought four people back from the dead; a friend of his named Al-Azam, an old woman’s son, and a woman’s only daughter. These three had died during his lifetime. When the Jews saw this they said: “You only resurrect those who have died recently; perhaps they only fainted.” They asked him to bring back to life Sham the son of Noah (AS).
When he asked them to show him his grave, the people accompanied him there. Jesus (AS) invoked Allah the Exalted to bring him back to life and behold, Sham the son of Noah (AS) came out from the grave gray-haired. Jesus (AS) asked: “How did you get gray hair, when there was no aging in your time?” He answered: O, Spirit of Allah, I thought that the Day of Resurrection had come; from the fear of that day my hair turned gray.”
“When Allah will say, ‘O Jesus son of Mariam! Remember My favor on you and on your mother, when I strengthened you with the holy Spirit, you spoke to the people in cradle and when of old age and when I taught you the Book and wisdom and the Torah and Evangel and when you determined out of clay a thing like the figure of a bird, by My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird by My permission, and you healed the blind, and the leprous by My Permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My permission; and when I withheld the children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear argument, but those who disbelieved among them said: “This is nothing but clear enchantment.” And when I revealed to the disciples, saying. Believe in Me and My Apostle, they said: “We believe and bear witness that we submit (ourselves).” (Qur’an, Chapter 5, Verses 110-111)

Jesus’s (AS) Abilities and Disciples
Almighty Allah also revealed: And He will teach him the Book and the wisdom and the Torah and the Evangel.
And (make him) an apostle to the children of Israel : That I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I determine for you out of clay like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird with Allah’s permission; and I heal the blind, and the leprous, and bring the dead to life with Allah’s permission and I inform you of what you should eat and what you should store in your houses; most surely there is a sign in this for you, if you are believers. And I am a verifier of that which is before me of the Torah, and that I may allow you of that which has been forbidden you, and I have come to you with a sign from your Lord therefore be careful of (your duty to) Allah and obey me. Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore serve Him; this is the right path.”
But when Jesus perceived unbelief on their part, he said: Who will be my helpers in Allah’s way? The disciples said: We are helpers ( in the way) of Allah: We believe in Allah and bear witness that we are submitting ones. Our Lord! We believe in what Thou has revealed and we follow the apostle, so write us down with those who bear witness. And they planned and Allah also planned. And Allah is the Best of planners.” (Qur’an, Chapter 3, Verses, 48-54)
It is noteworthy that Mariam (SA) and her son are both considered as signs or models for people of the world. This is particularly interesting, since one isn’t appreciated over the other.
The Qur’an repeats this narration with a different wording in Chapter Al-e Imran but basically from here onwards Mariam (SA) is mentioned only alongside Jesus (AS) and not as before where she played a central role.
“And We made the son of Mariam (SA) and his mother as a sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground affording rest and security and furnished with springs.” (23:50)
At the threshold of the Christian New Year; faith, chastity, sincerity, purity, moral and social commitment and spiritual elevation are all attributes of a flawless personality that deserves to be considered as a model for the confused human race.
