Hazrat Maryam (A.S.)
Translated by Fatima Zabeth Beenesh from the Farsi book "Tarikh i-Anbiya az Adam ta Khatam" by Husain Imadzadeh
Hazrat Maryam's a.s father was among the scholars, nobles and honored men of Bani Israil. His wife’s name was Hanna and her sister hannana was wife of prophet Zakaria a.s. After Hazrat Adam a.s his children were dispersed. After prophet shees a.s his children scattered. The mankind affected by the floods in the period of prophet Nuh a.s drowned.
After the generation of Nuh a.s allah sub'hana brought forward hazrat Ibrahim a.s and appointed him as a prophet and his descendents are called as “Ale Imran” and blessed them superiority over the whole creation. In the definition of ayat "Innal lahas satafa adama va ibrahim va ale ibrahim va ale imran alal aalamin" by Ale Ibrahim means the children of Ibahim a.s. Ismail a.s and Is'haq are sons of Ibrahim. Bani Israil are descendants of Is'haq.
The last prophet hazrat Muhammad sawa and Sahab Zaman hazrat Mehdi a.s ( great grand son of Prophet Mohammed pbuh) are from the progeny of hazrat Ismail a.s.
Imran descendant of Is'Haq a.s. was father of hazrat Maryam a.s. Allah exalted selected Maryam a.s for sanctity and purity and blessed prophecy and a book "Bible". The gap between two Imrans, one Imran father of Amiral mominin Ali a.s and another imran father of Maryam a.s. is one thousand and eight hundred years. Therefore the children of Ismail and Is'haq are related to the last prophet hazrat Muhammad sawa.
Birth and Childhood of Maryam a.s
When wife of Imran was expecting a child she vowed to dedicate her child to serve the place of worship "Baitul Muqaddas" Jerusalem. Until Maryam a.s was seven years old her mother took care of her and then she took her to those who were in charge of the temple of "Baitul Muqaddas" Jerusalem. Like a devoted person turned her face towards the house of god and said: 3:35
rabbi innee wadaAAtuha ontha waAllahuaAAlamu wadaAAat walaysa alththakarukaalontha wa-innee sammaytuha maryamawa-innee oAAeethuha bika wathurriyyatahamina alshshaytani alrrajeemi
"O my Lord! Behold! I delivered of a female child!"- and Allah knew best what she brought forth- "And no wise is the male Like the female. I have named her Mary, and I commend her and her offspring to Thy protection from the Evil One, the Rejected."
According to historians, the chief caretakers of the holy place was prophet Zakaria a.s. After the death of Imran there was no one to look after Maryam a.s so she was taken care by Zakaria a.s as he was related to Maryam a.s. Since childhood Maryam was spiritualistic. Her interest was always in some another world.
One day Zakaria saw some food in Maryam's chamber. The food was extra ordinary and not like worldly food. He asked her "Is that your food" She replied "yes, it is from God and he descends to whom he wants he descends"
Allah exalted said:" Maryam is the offspring of Ibrahim a.s." Give birth to Isa a.s without father and wanted him to be the descendant of Ibrahim a.s. Glad tiding of Isa a.s to Maryam a.s
Allah exalted said in Quran:
3:45 Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah;
Ith qalati almala-ikatuya maryamu inna Allaha yubashshiruki bikalimatinminhu ismuhu almaseehu AAeesa ibnu maryama wajeehanfee alddunya waal-akhirati waminaalmuqarrabeena
Maryam a.s pregnancy
One day hazrat Maryam a.s went to hazrat Zakaria's house to meet her aunt. She went to a lonely place to take bath. This place is called "aenus salath". She hanged a curtain when suddenly Jibril a.s appeared in face of young man who was very handsome. Seeing his glorious appearance Maryam a.s got terrified and said: 19:18 "I seek refuge from you to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if you do Allah." Qalat innee aAAoothu bialrrahmaniminka in kunta taqiyyan.
19:19 He said: "Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord, (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son.
Qala innama ana rasoolurabbiki li-ahaba laki ghulaman zakiyyan.
Saying this Jibril a.s blowed on her and disappeared. After that first sight changes began to appear in Maryam a.s. as she was expecting Isa a.s. Then she went o Aqsa mosque from the house of Zakaria a.s, concealed her secret and set herself aloof from people. When the period of pregnancy reached to extremes she was told to leave "Baitul Muqaddas" Jerusalem as it was place of worship.
Birth of prophet Isa a.s
O Maryam leave this place as this is a place of worship. So from there she went to "Baitul ham" near the bank of "Shat e Furath" or river Euphrates where she reached a date palm. It was land called Babul which is known as Karbala today.
19:23 And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!"
Faajaaha almakhadu ilajithAAi alnnakhlati qalat ya laytaneemittu qabla hatha wakuntu nasyan mansiyyan.
She leaned upon the date palm and then Isa a.s was born 582 years before hijrat of last prophet hazrat Muhammad sawa. Maryam a.s was very much tired, hungry and unhappy. She was told by god to: Hold the branch of palm tree and fresh dates will fall upon her. After listening to this she said when" I used to be at home you used to send me food from heaven and in here every where is desert, agony and pain ".She was replied: Then you were only filled with my love and now you have love of your son.
At that time Maryam a.s questioned what shall I say if anyone ask me about this child? When the new born said “Mother do not get sad”.
19:24 But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet and river beneath thee;
Fanadaha min tahtihaalla tahzanee qad jaAAala rabbuki tahtakisariyyan
God had flown a river behind your feet drink from this water and get joyful and you will reach the prosperity and success. And if anyone asks you "who is father of this new born?” You reply "I have vowed to fast and not to talk to any one".
Maryam a.s bathed the child and wrapped him in a cloth.
19:26 "So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man, say, 'I
have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into not talk
with any human being'"
Fakulee waishrabee waqarree AAaynanfa-imma tarayinna mina albashari ahadan

On the guidance of Jibril a.s the newborn was named Isa. Maraym a.s went to baitul ham when Bani Israil gathered around her and began to dishonor her.
Maryam ,who is this new born you did a very nasty job.
19:28 "O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!"
Ya okhta haroona ma kanaabooki imraa saw-in wama kanat ommuki baghiyyan
19:29 But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"
Faasharat ilayhi qaloo kayfanukallimu man kana fee almahdi sabiyyan
19:30 He said: "I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet;
Qala innee AAabdu Allahi ataniyaalkitaba wajaAAalanee nabiyyan
19:31 "And He hath made me blessed where so ever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;
WajaAAalanee mubarakan aynamakuntu waawsanee bialssalati waalzzakatima dumtu hayyan
19:32 "(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;
Wabarran biwalidatee walam yajAAalneejabbaran shaqiyyan
19:33 "So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)"!
Waalssalamu AAalayya yawmawulidtu wayawma amootu wayawma obAAathu hayyan
Hearing this people dispersed.
Prophet Isa a.s childhood
Maryam a.s took Isa a.s to Egypt along with her and raised him there. For education and training she entrusted him to a teacher and told him not to beat him.
The teacher asked Isa a.s to say Alif, B Jeem, Dal popularly known as abjad. Isa a.s asked him the meaning of Alif, B Jeem, Dal
May be the teacher himself did not know the meaning of it. So he ignored his question and again asked him to say Alif, B, Jeem, Dal. Then Isa a.s replied I will not reply until you teach me the meaning. The teacher rebuked and insulted Isa a.s. Suddenly Maryam a.s reached there and Isa a.s told Maryam a.s "O mother the teacher ignored completely your recommendation and caned and scolded me.
After that Isa a.s turned towards his teacher and said, “The meaning of Alif is Allah, B is for "baqae haq" eternity of truth, Jeem is for "Jamaal" God's beauty and elegance and Dal is "dalalath and rahnumai" the guidance of God. The teacher told the Maryam a.s to take him along with her so that people learn something from him.
Migration of Maryam from Egypt to Jerusalem:
They left Egypt and went to prophet Yahya ibn Zakaria a.s. The doors of heaven opened when Isa took the oath and ceremonial bath by the hands of Yahya a.s. From there he went to the city of Nasera which was a town of Syria. Therefore he was called Isa Naseri and his followers were called as 'Nasrani'.
In Egypt when Isa a.s was 12 years old his mind always used to revolve in the world of existence and he always used to read from the book of nature.
When Yahya a.s was captivated and imprisoned by the king Hardosh Isa a.s left Nasera and dwelled on the bank of Syria and started his prophecy.
The death of Maryam a.s.
Maryam a.s used to serve and worship in Jerusalem as it was vow of her mother. Some times she used to go to the mountains and deserts to worship God without any food. There she used to eat wild herbs and leaves. Once when Maryam and Isa went to the mountain for worship when they reached the valley of Damascus she got very tired and slept in the foot of the mountain and left this mortal world.
God the exalted send the houris from the heaven to bath and wrap her in the shroud and covered her with a white sheet. When it was the time to open the fast and prayers Isa a.s began to call her. Upon getting no reply from his mother he went nearer and set aside the sheet from her face and found that his mother had left the world.
Isa a.s was mournful and was broken into tears. He bought the body to Jerusalem and buried her. Isa began his preaching and announced the Sunday’s as a holiday. He used to mourn and cry always in remembrance of his mother. After loosing his mother all the hardships inflicted upon Isa a.s
The innocent and impeccable Maryam a.s in her life time faced extraordinary reproaches and criticizes from the people which made the livelihood of Isa a.s very difficult. People’s thorny tongue towards Maryam a.s was very terrible for him.
Isa a.s who was a prophet believed his mother's short and painful period of life time was full of heart rending and difficulties. His happiness was only his mother and after his mother’s dead he was moved with grief. In silence he always prayed for her.
According to allama majlisi she died before the ascension, the bodily ascending of Christ from earth to heaven.
