Christmas Reflections

By: Seyyed Ali Shahbaz
“And remember when Jesus, son of Mary, said, O children of Israel, surely I am Allah's Messenger unto you fulfilling that which is before me of Torah, and giving glad tidings of the Messenger who will come after me. His name will be Ahmad. And when he came to them with clear proofs they said, 'This is clear enchantment.” (Holy Qur’an 61:6)
Greetings to the Virgin-Born on the day that has been dubbed Christmas ever since the Gentile converts of Europe, several centuries after the end of the mission of the Messiah, replaced the pagan Bacchanal depravities of the 25th of December with commemoration of the birth of Jesus, although they had no clue on which date of the Hebrew lunar calendar this Great Prophet, whom they mistakenly took as ‘God-son’ because of his miraculous birth, was born.
The intention is not to mar the holiday mood in the West on this day, but the fact cannot be denied that neither we agree with the rebirth of Bacchanal festivities in the Americas and Europe on Christmas, nor does the Messiah approve of the crooked ways of those who claim to follow him, when in fact they have turned their backs on all his teachings.
Jesus and the Virgin Mary cannot be the symbol of societies where women not only do not cover their hairs and the shape of bodies, but also indulge freely in the cardinal sins of adultery and fornication, on the pretext of ‘freedom and liberties’, while men consider sodomy as something normal.
These sins of the flesh that are rampant in the Christian societies, are in addition to the unchristian policies of the leaders of the West, who cheat, lie, transgress, torture, wage war on weak nations, build weapons of mass destruction, and massacre people by the millions, then resort to hypocrisy by celebrating Christmas and releasing messages of ‘peace’, thereby making a mockery of Jesus and his message.
Moreover, these self-styled Christians love to torment the soul of the Messiah as is clear by their dancing to the tunes of his betrayers, the Israelites, the tribe of the turncoat Judas Iscariot, who till this day openly insult Prophet Jesus (AS) and blasphemously slander his Virgin Mother (SA).
In view of these undeniable facts, I have quoted God’s Words in the holy Qur’an which to this day has remarkably preserved the gist of the message of Jesus, when he speaks of the coming of the Last and Greatest of Divine Messengers, Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).
The Messiah called him Hmda in his native Hebrew, a word that was translated to “Paraclete” in the Greek version of St. John’s Gospel, and to “Comforter” in King James’ English translation.
At any rate, it is in Islam, and especially in the school of the Ahl al-Bayt that the real visage of Jesus and his genuine teachings are not only preserved, but practiced. The following words of the Prophet’s First Infallible Successor, Imam Ali (AS), are proof in this regard: “If you like, I will tell you about Jesus the son of Mary (AS). He used a stone as his pillow, wore coarse clothing and ate rough food. His stew was hunger and his lamp in the night was the moon. His shade in the winter was the east of the earth and its west. His fruit and his basil were what grows from the earth for the cattle. He had no wife to try him, and no son to grieve him. He had no wealth to distract him, nor greed to abase him. He had no mount to ride but his feet, and none were his servants but his own two hands." (Nahj al-Balaghah, Sermon 158)
Here it would not be out of context to quote a passage from the famous collection of Hadith, titled Bihar al-Anwar: “Imam Ali (AS) said: The Messenger of Allah called me and said, O Ali! Verily, there is a similarity between you and Jesus the son of Mary (AS). The Christians love him so much that they put him in a position that was not for him; and the Jews hate him so much that they even slandered his mother.
Imam Ali (AS) added: Two (groups of) people will bring about their ruin because of me, he who goes to extremes in love of me for what I do not have, and he who hates me with a hatred that makes him slander me.”
