| Tafsir Surah Saff (The Ranks)
By: Ayatullah al-Uzma Nasir Makarim Shirazi from ‘Tafsir i-Namunah’Translated from Farsi into English by Fatima Zabeth Beenesh
Sura e Saff (The Ranks) - ÓæÑÉ ÇáÝ
This sura descended at Madina and it has 14 aayat
The contents of sura e Saff
In fact this sura rotates around the two basic pivots, one the superiority of Islam upon all the heavenly religions and giving assurance from Allah about the eternity of Islam and the performance of Jihad for the protection and improvement of this religion.
But defining it in detail the sura e Saff can be divided in seven parts.
1- The sura starts by the praise of Mighty and Wise God and the readiness in the hearts to accept the facts that are mentioned later.
2- Invited for the harmony in the words and deeds and to avoid the words which does not have action.
3- Invited for the holy war with firm resolution and complete unity.
4- To remember the Bani Israel’s the breaking of promise and the glad tiding of Christ regarding the advent of Islam.
5- Assured the success of Islam upon all the religions.
6- An effective invitation towards the performance of jihad and defines the worldly rewards and the returns of hereafter of the holy warriors.
7- It indicates towards the life of Christ’s companions and taking inspiration from them.
But the main pivot as it is told is Islam and Jihad. The selection of the name Saff is for the reason that the term is used in the 4th ayat. Sometimes it is named as sura e Eesa(Christ) or sura e Havarin (the companions of Christ).
It is famous that this sura entirely descended at Medina and the aayaat of holy war ‘jihad’ in this sura too proves that, as we are well aware that jihad was not authorized in Mecca.

The virtues of reciting the sura e SaffIn a hadis from the prophet peace be upon him we read: Anybody who reads the Sura e Isa (sura e Saff is called sura Isa too), the prophet ‘Christ’ “Isa” sends blessings for this person till he or she is alive in this world and seeks forgiveness for him and on the day of resurrection he is a friend with that person.
In another hadis by Imam Baqir alaihis salam we read: the person who reads sura e Saff in the obligatory and Supererogatory (Mustahab) namaz and continues this act. The Mighty God will place him in the line of the angels and the messengers.

Shaan e NuzulAll about its descent:
They interpretation for the ayat below

áöãó ÊóÞõæáõæäó ãóÇ áóÇ ÊóÝúÚóáõæäó Described the numerous shan e nuzul, they are such that:
1- A group of momineen who were stating: After this any time when we face the enemy we will not turn back and we will not run away but they did not remained loyal to their words as far as on the Battle of Ohod the prophet’s tooth broke down and his forehead injured.
2- When the Merciful God defined the virtues of the martyrs of battle of Badr, a group of companions said: If it is like that in the future wars we will put forth our entire force but at the battle of Ohod they escaped the battle field. The above ayat descended and accused them.
3- A group of believers before the descent of command of jihad ‘the holy war’, they were telling: We wish the benevolent God soon show us the best deed to act upon it. Soon the Guardian God informed them: the best deeds are the true believe and fighting in the way of Allah svt. But they did not like that declaration. They delayed it. This ayat descended and reproached them.

Definition:The respected battle like the iron dam
This sura too is started by the praise of the supreme God. For this reason it is counted among the chapters of
 ãÓÈÍÇÊ
The sura which is started by the praise of Allah
It is said: whatever is in the skies and the earth praise the Allah

ÓóÈøóÍó áöáøóåö ãóÇ Ýöí ÇáÓøóãóÇæóÇÊö æóãóÇ Ýöí ÇáúÃóÑúÖö æóåõæó ÇáúÚóÒöíÒõ ÇáúÍóßöíãõ Why do not they praise him and count how much he is clean from every defect and fault when he is such powerful who cannot be defeated and wise who is well aware of everything.
Therefore we expressed before that this sura is the sura of belief, unity of Allah and his recognition, carried the attention towards the entire admiration of every creature that silently performs and praise the Allah Almighty.
And an amazing system is ruling upon them that is a best evidence of the existence of powerful and wise creator who strengthens the foundation of belief in the hearts and confirms the way of jihad to obey the command of the jihad.
Then to scold those do not practice what they say and said: O people who believe! Why do you say which you do not practice?
Though according to shan e nuzul ‘all about its descend’ these aayaat are regarding the Jihad, the holy war and descended at the occasion of battle of Ohod. But we know quite well that the shan e nuzul never limits the vast meaning of the ayat. Therefore every kind of saying which is not practiced, it has in itself accusation and blameworthiness whether it is connected to the bravery in the battle field or any other positive and constructive act.
Some of the interpreters believed that the Muslims those call themselves Muslim for name sake and they are complete hypocrites whereas the ayat below express that they are genuine Muslims but still they are not reached to the perfection in their believe. Their words still did not coordinate with their acts.
Then in the continuation of these words it is added: This act creates great anger near Allah svt that what they say they do no act upon it.

ßóÈõÑó ãóÞúÊðÇ ÚöäÏó Çááøóåö Ãóä ÊóÞõæáõæÇ ãóÇ áóÇ ÊóÝúÚóáõæäó They sit in the social gathering and give emotional speech but when the stage of deed reaches everybody runs away to a corner.
The main sign of true believer is that their words and acts are similar the believer is away from the immoral act.
 ßóÈõÑó ãóÞúÊðÇ
The above term means great anger
Allama Tabatabaee in his book Almeezan said: There is a difference between the person who tells but not acts upon it and the one who does not do what he said. The first one proves hypocrisy and the second one is weak in his determination.
Apparently it means that sometimes a man says something but he has no intention to act upon it. It is a kind of hypocrisy. But often right from beginning the person’s intention is not to act but later he feels regretful about that deed.
Any way the above ayat includes every type of oath, agreement and promise. According to certain people the vow before the God too includes in it. Hence in the command of Malik Ashtar we read that Ali alaihis salam told him: strictly avoid the promise in which there is a fear that you may violate it, as it causes the extreme anger towards Allah svt and the common man. As the Noble Quran says:

ßóÈõÑó ãóÞúÊðÇ ÚöäÏó Çááøóåö Ãóä ÊóÞõæáõæÇ ãóÇ áóÇ ÊóÝúÚóáõæäó In another hadis from imam Sadiq alaihis salam we read: the promise of momin (believer) to his brother is a kind of nazr ( the vow before Allah svt) though it does not have compensation and brought forth oneself under the rage of Allah svt. This is same as defined in the noble Quran:

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂóãóäõæÇ áöãó ÊóÞõæáõæäó ãóÇ áóÇ ÊóÝúÚóáõæäó In the next ayat presented the issue of Jihad and said: the supreme God love those people who fight in a row in the divine cause like an iron building and a steel dam.

Åöäøó Çááøóåó íõÍöÈøõ ÇáøóÐöíäó íõÞóÇÊöáõæäó Ýöí ÓóÈöíáöåö óÝøðÇ ßóÃóäøóåõã ÈõäíóÇäñ ãøóÑúõæñ Therefore to fight with the real self is not proposed, what is important is to fight in the way of Allah “fi sabil lillah” that too with total unity and solidarity just like a steel wall.
 Ý
The above term gives the meaning of row and it is in the infinite form which means to place something in the well-ordered row. But here it gives the meaning of subject.
 ãÑæ
It gives the meaning of lead (a heavy toxic bluish-white metallic element) as for the firmness and integration (assimilation) of the building they were diluting the lead and pouring it in between its blocks such that it was getting extremely strong and unified. Every tough building is given the name of “marsus”.
Here it means the warriors in the way of truth before enemy they stand unanimous, undivided, strong and firm as if they are a single body connected to each other with no break in it. Hence in the definition of this ayat of Ali bin Ibrahim we read: they construct a row in the way of truth which is like a building that never breakdowns.
In a hadis it is mentioned that amiral mominin Ali alahis salam in the battle field of Siffin while he wanted to organize his companions for war, he announced:
The Mighty God guided you towards this duty and said: Verily Allah svt loves those who fought in the way of supreme God like a strong building therefore tighten your rows and those wearing the armors proceed in the beginning of the rows and those who are without the armor march behind them. Ground the teeth. Demonstrate swift twist and turn to defend before the spears of enemy, it is very much effective. Stare to the crowd of enemy to strengthen your heart and for the peace of your soul. Speak less which wards away the laziness and suits your dignity. Never tilt your flags and do not move them from their place and do not entrust the flag except the brave hearted people.

 The points
1- The need of unity in the rows
The most important basis of the victory over enemy is the unity and connection of the rows in the battlefield before the enemy; not only in the military fight but in the political and economic fight too there is no method other then following this method of unity in action.
In fact the noble Quran compared the enemies to the destructive floods which could bring to halt only by a steel barrier. The term below
 ÈõäíóÇäñ ãøóÑúõæñ
presents an attractive term for this situation related to an edifice or a massive dam, this is effective when there is no crack or gap between them. They should unite in such a way that they look like a single body. All must transform just like a strong ironic fist which crushes and scatters the head of enemy.
Regretfully this great teaching had been forgotten in today’s life and now a days the great Muslim society is not a Bunyan Marsus now but they had transformed into the scattered rows and confronted one another. Each and every person of them had their own intention in head and a personal desire in their heart.
We must be careful that the unity of rows cannot be achieved just by the words and slogans. It needs unity of purpose and faith. It is possible only by being sincere, the true vision of Allah, the right Islamic training and the revival of Islamic culture.
Allah admires only the holy struggle which is similar to ‘bunyan marsus’ a massive dam or organization and he dislike the dispersed masses of people and now we are observing the traces of divine wrath upon this society of hundreds and millions of people and one of its example is the domination of a small group of Zionist over a vast land of Muslims. O Allah! Bless us awareness and knowledge of noble Quran and its life giving education. Ameen.

2- The sayings that are lacking any deed
The tongue translates the heart and if both of them divert their ways then it becomes the sign of hypocrisy. We are aware that a hypocrite individual does not possess a healthy mind and soul.
The worst calamity that may dominate the society is the disaster of dissatisfaction and the main cause of it is the separation of the said words and the deeds. The people who preach and practice them too never trust each other and they cannot be harmonious at the difficult periods. Certainly the brotherhood and the sincerity will not rule over them and it has no value and importance for them and not a single enemy get alarmed of them.
When the plunderers of Syrian army invaded the boundaries of Iraq the report reached hazrat Ali alaihis salam. He got extremely upset and addressed the people.
In his speech which expresses the pain of his holy heart, he talked to the people of Iraq and said: O people whose bodies are intact and hearts and thoughts are dispersed. Your hot words break apart the hard stones but your weak deeds bring your enemies to the greed. In your parties and gatherings you say so and so but at the time of war you scream and say: O war get apart from us.
In a hadees by Imam Sadiq alaihis salam we read: The learned man is the one whose deeds confirm his words. Anybody whose deeds do not empower his words he is not a learned person.
One of the present poets depicted the nations in a beautiful story who are arrested in the claws of the enemies; he defined in the dialogues of nightingale and the hunting falcon.
The nightingale says: I am such an orator and the sweet singer with a delicate and beautiful body.
This cage is my house and my days are like the night. My gains are sadness, sorrows and depression.
In respond, the hunter falcon said: you are quite right, although his brain was pretty bright.
Your custom is to preach and tell the people but not practicing upon it and my habit is to practice but not telling and expressing anything to anybody.

And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

æóÅöÐú ÞóÇáó ÚöíÓóì ÇÈúäõ ãóÑúíóãó íóÇ Èóäöí ÅöÓúÑóÇÆöíáó Åöäøöí ÑóÓõæáõ Çááøóåö Åöáóíúßõã ãøõóÏøöÞðÇ áøöãóÇ Èóíúäó íóÏóíøó ãöäó ÇáÊøóæúÑóÇÉö æóãõÈóÔøöÑðÇ ÈöÑóÓõæáò íóÃúÊöí ãöä ÈóÚúÏöí ÇÓúãõåõ ÃóÍúãóÏõ ÝóáóãøóÇ ÌóÇÁåõã ÈöÇáúÈóíøöäóÇÊö ÞóÇáõæÇ åóÐóÇ ÓöÍúÑñ ãøõÈöíäñ (61:6 ) And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad." But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, "This is obvious magic."

Definition:I brought the glad tiding of Ahmad!
In the continuation of two commands of previous ayaat about the harmony of the words and deeds and unity of the rows in this ayat it is mentioned for the completion of its meaning and focused on the life of two prophets Musa alaihis salam ‘Moses ‘and Isa alaihis salam ‘Christ’ which is regretfully a perfect example of difference of words and the deeds and lack of solidarity which is observed in the acts of the followers of both the prophets and the ill fate they created behind it.
First it said: And remember when Musa alaihis salam told the people of his tribe: O my people, why are you hurting me I am send towards you from Mighty God.

æóÅöÐú ÞóÇáó ãõæÓóì áöÞóæúãöåö íóÇ Þóæúãö áöãó ÊõÄúÐõæäóäöí æóÞóÏ ÊøóÚúáóãõæäó Ãóäøöí ÑóÓõæáõ Çááøóåö Åöáóíúßõãú This hurting possibly indicating the obstructions and excuses expressed to prophet Musa alaihis salam. Bani Israil in the entire life of Musa A S told to this great prophet or pointed towards the event such as incident of Baitul Muqaddas where they told to Musa alaihis salam: We are not ready to enter this city and fight with ‘Amaliqa’ who were a very strong and tyrant group. You along with your Provider God go and conquer that place so that we can enter there (Sura e Maida- ayat 24)
This same matter caused them to remain in the valley of Tia for many years and taste the bitter flavor of their unrealistic claims and idleness in the cause of Jihad ‘the holy war’.
But according to the ayat 29 of sura e Ahzab it seems this harassment and maltreatments showing the unjust accusations they imposed upon Musa alaihiss salam and the benevolent God made the prophet Musa alaihis salam free of all that blames. And in this ayat we read: Al-Ahzab (The Confederates)

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂãóäõæÇ áóÇ ÊóßõæäõæÇ ßóÇáøóÐöíäó ÂÐóæúÇ ãõæÓóì ÝóÈóÑøóÃóåõ Çááøóåõ ãöãøóÇ ÞóÇáõæÇ æóßóÇäó ÚöäÏó Çááøóåö æóÌöíåðÇ (33:69 ) O you, who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allah cleared the prophet of what they said. And he was honorable in the sight of Allah.
This kind of blames where many, sometimes they accused him of killing his brother Harun a s and at times they blamed him the relations with a woman of loose character, a plot which was planned by the deceitful Qarun “korah” who was not accepting the command of giving the zakat (charity). Often his people were criticizing Musa alaihis salam of being a sorcerer and insane person and blamed him of possessing some physical defects, it is described at the bottom of the sura e Ahzab.
How is it possible the one who is the claimant of being a prophet, these blames are imposed upon him? Is not it a clear example of the difference between the words and the deed? Hence Musa alaihis salam said: In spite of your believe that I am the messenger of Mighty God then what are these unjust words you express about me?
But this act was not left without the punishment such as in the end of the ayat under discussion we read: when they deviated the truth the supreme God deviated their hearts and the benevolent God never guides the vulgar and lustful people.

ÝóáóãøóÇ ÒóÇÛõæÇ ÃóÒóÇÛó Çááøóåõ ÞõáõæÈóåõãú æóÇááøóåõ áóÇ íóåúÏöí ÇáúÞóæúãó ÇáúÝóÇÓöÞöíäó ) Which calamity is greater than this? That the man gets deprived of the divine guidance and his heart deviates from the right path?
By this term we come to the conclusion that the guidance and the deviation though from the merciful God but the backgrounds, its arrangements and the causes are created from the zone of man himself. As from one side he said: when they deviated from the truth the Holy God diverted their hearts that means the first step was initiated by them and from the other side it said: The Majestic God never guides the lustful and vulgar people the first sin and vicious act takes place when the deserved person is deprived of divine guidance and success.
In the next ayat pointed towards the issue of the prophecy of Isa alaihis salam and the obstructions and denial of Bani Israil before him and added: Remember when Isa alaihis salam son of Maryam ‘Mary‘said: O Bani Israil! I am sent from Compassionate God towards you and confirming the book which is sent before me (Taurat).

æóÅöÐú ÞóÇáó ÚöíÓóì ÇÈúäõ ãóÑúíóãó íóÇ Èóäöí ÅöÓúÑóÇÆöíáó Åöäøöí ÑóÓõæáõ Çááøóåö Åöáóíúßõã ãøõóÏøöÞðÇ áøöãóÇ Èóíúäó íóÏóíøó ãöäó ÇáÊøóæúÑóÇÉö And giving the glad tiding of a messenger, arriving after me whose name is Ahmad,

æóãõÈóÔøöÑðÇ ÈöÑóÓõæáò íóÃúÊöí ãöä ÈóÚúÏöí ÇÓúãõåõ ÃóÍúãóÏõ Therefore I am linking the nation of Musa alaihis salam and his book to the future prophet (the prophet of Islam) and his book.
Like this manner hazrat Isa alaihis salam was not claimed except the divine prophecy that too at the specific period of time. Whatever is expressed about his being God or son of God is entirely incorrect and false.
Though a group of Bani Israil brought faith upon this promised prophet but a large group stood against him adamantly and even rejected his apparent miracles hence in the end of the ayat it added: when He (Ahmad) rose up with the miracles and the evident proved, they said: This is a perfect magic.

ÝóáóãøóÇ ÌóÇÁåõã ÈöÇáúÈóíøöäóÇÊö ÞóÇáõæÇ åóÐóÇ ÓöÍúÑñ ãøõÈöíäñ Strangely: the tribe of Jews prior to the polytheists recognized this prophet and even in the enthusiasm to meet him, they left their mother land. A tribe of them went and settled at the city of Medina but in spite of all that the idolaters finally recognized the prophet peace be upon him and brought faith upon him. But most of the Jews stood adamantly upon their enmity and negation.

 The points:
1- The connection of glad tiding and the completion of religion
The term glad tiding of Christ regarding the advent of Islam indicating delicately towards the completion of this religion compared to other religions. The study of the Quranic ayat and comparison of the education and the teachings of Islam revealed clearly whatever was in both the periods {the period of Bible and the Old Testament (Taurat) though in the above ayat it is not present the discussion of this glad tiding. Whether in the content of divine books Christ was there or not but the other aayaat are the witness of its definition in the Injil (Bible). In the ayat 157 of Sura e Araf we read:

ÇáøóÐöíäó íóÊøóÈöÚõæäó ÇáÑøóÓõæáó ÇáäøóÈöíøó ÇáÃõãøöíøó ÇáøóÐöí íóÌöÏõæäóåõ ãóßúÊõæÈðÇ ÚöäÏóåõãú Ýöí ÇáÊøóæúÑóÇÉö æóÇáÅöäúÌöíáö Those who follow the Messenger who can neither read nor write (i.e.Muhammad SAW) whom they find written with them in the Taurat (Torah) (Deut, xviii, 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16) and many other ayaat of noble Quran.

2 The glad tiding of both the eras and the term “Farqaleeta"
Truly whatever is in the hands of the Jews and the Christians by the name of taurat and injil (Torah and Bible) they are not the books which are descended upon the great prophets like Musa and Isa alaihumus salam (Moses and Jesus) but they are collections of books which were compiled by the hands of their companions or the individuals who arrived into this world after them. A brief analysis in these books is a live eyewitness of these claims. The Christians and Jews too have no other claim than this.
But without any doubt a part of the teachings of Musa and Isa alaihumus salam (Moses and Jesus) according to the followers transferred to these books. For this reason, whatever is in the old period (the bible and Torah linked to that period) and the new period, they have to be accepted. It neither can be denied totally. But it consists of the mixer of the teachings of these two prodigious prophets with the feelings and beliefs of others.
Any way in the present books they are many contents regarding the glad tidings of the great advent which confirms the signs of Islam and its messenger.
It is noticeable that except the predictions which is seen in this book and it relates to the prophet of Islam, in the three occasions of the bible of Yuhanna relied upon the term Farqaleeta which in the farsi translated as the consoler and comforter. Now we pay attention towards the context of the Bible of Yuhanna: And I want by my father and he will send another consoler and comforter who will live with you forever.
In the next chapter it is mentioned: when that consoler arrives whom I will send on the behalf of my father, which is a right spirit from my father who will give witness on behalf of me.
In the next chapter we read: But I am telling you the truth which is good for you and that it is better for me to go and if I do not go then that consoler will not come between you. And if I go I will send him among you.
Important is that in the Syrian text of the bibles which is taken from the basic Greek it is mentioned instead of consoler “Parqaleeta”.
In the Greek text the term “Peerkiltus” is mentioned according to the Greek vocabulary it means “ admired” man equivalent to the term Muhammad, Ahmad.
When the chiefs of church felt that to propagate such name there may give a hard blow to their own establishment so instead of Peerkiltus they wrote Parakeltus which means consoler. By this apparent distortion they changed the authentic evidence though in spite of this distortion too it gives the accurate proof of a great arrival in the future.
In the first volume of “Tafseer E Namuneh” in the clear evidence from the Christian priests who after a period of time accepted Islam.
Here I bring your attention towards the translation which is mentioned in the great French Encyclopaedias about that subject: Muhammad (sava) is the founder of the religion Islam and he is sent by God and he is the last prophet. The term Muhammad means the one who is admired extremely and its base is hamd that means glorification and exaltation and it is derived from that term. And by a strange incident the other name as well was based upon the word hamd it is synonymous to Muhammad (sava) that is mentioned as Ahmad and it is a strong probability. And the Christians of Arab were using that word at the place of parkaleet, Ahmad the one who is admired excessively and tremendously glorious’ it is the translation of the “Peerkiltus” and wrongly positioned at its place the name Parakeltus. For that reason the Muslim writers repeatedly reminded that by this term it means the glad tiding of the arrival of prophet of Islam. The noble Quran as well apparently indicated towards this matter in the amazing ayat of sura e Saff.
Any how the meaning of Farqaleeta is not the consoler or Holy Spirit but its meaning is equivalent to Ahmad (point to be noted).

3- Does the name of the Messenger of Islam is Ahmad?
It is the important question that is discussed here the most famous name of the prophet of Islam is Muhammad (sallalaho alaihim va ala alehi) whereas in the ayat under discussion is mentioned as Ahmad then how is it well-suited?
In the reply of this question it is necessary to pay the attention to the points mentioned below.
 A. In the history it is mentioned that the prophet of Islam since childhood was called by two names even the people were calling him by both the names. One Muhammad another Ahmad and the first name his grandfather selected for him and another name was nominated by his noble mother.
This subject was discussed in detail in the Seerah Halbi.
B- The one who called him by this name repetitively was his paternal uncle Abu Talib. Even today in the book by the name Deevan E Abu Talib that is circulating in our hands, verses were seen in which the prophet was called as Ahmad.
There are so many verses in the poetry of Abu Talib where he called him Ahmad instead of Muhammad (sava) that is not enough space to quote them here.
C- Regarding the occurrence of “Meraj” we read frequently that the Benevolent Allah addressed the prophet of Islam by the title of “Ahmad” may be from here it became famous that the name of the prophet of Islam in the heaven is Ahmad and on the earth it is Muhammad (sava).
In a hadis from imam Baqir alaihis salam it is narrated that the prophet of Islam was called by ten names and five were mentioned in the noble Quran and they are Muhammad sava, Ahmad, Abdullah, Yaseen and Noon.
 D. When the prophet of Islam recited the above ayaat (the ayaat of sura e Saff) for the people of Mecca and Medina, surely it reached to the people of book .No body from the unbelievers too criticized the prophet. Injeel (Bible) gave the glad tiding regarding the advent of the prophet Ahmad his name is Muhammad (sawa). It proves that the Ahmad was popular among them and if there was any condemnation, there would quote it for us too. The history declared for us whatever the criticizers among enemies expressed even the nasty statements were recorded by the historians.

Definition:Do they want to put off the light of Allah with their mouth?!
In the above ayaat we read that a group of obstinate enemies though the glad tiding of former prophet hazrat Isa alaihis salam was linked with the invitation of the prophet of Islam with clear and evident proofs and miracles, how they opposed and rejected it. The ayaat under discussion defined the consequences and fate of their deeds.
First it said: the person is most cruel who falsified the God despite the fact that he is invited towards Him.

æóãóäú ÃóÙúáóãõ ãöãøóäö ÇÝúÊóÑóì Úóáóì Çááøóåö ÇáúßóÐöÈó æóåõæó íõÏúÚóì Åöáóì ÇáúÅöÓúáóÇãö æóÇááøóåõ áóÇ íóåúÏöí ÇáúÞóæúãó ÇáÙøóÇáöãöíäó (61:7 ) Yeah it is true, the one who falsified the divine invitation, counted his miracles as magic and his religion unsuccessful and he had closed the way of guidance and salvation for himself and he is the most cruel as he closed the main stream of divine grace and deprived the people, the guarantee that ensures the eternal welfare.
In the end of the ayat it said: the Majestic and Dominant God never forgives the cruel people.

æóÇááøóåõ áóÇ íóåúÏöí ÇáúÞóæúãó ÇáÙøóÇáöãöíäó The duty of Benevolent God is to guide, his pure nature (zaat e pak) is the spiritual light and illumination “Noor e ma’navi”. Our guidance needs base and back ground. And this base does not exist in those people who are the enemies of truth.
This ayat once again emphasise upon the fact that though the guidance and misguidance is from Mighty God. But the first steps initiates from the man himself. For that reason he is never forced for any of his act.

æóåõæó íõÏúÚóì Åöáóì ÇáúÅöÓúáóÇãö The above ayat defines that the invitation of prophet peace upon him guaranties the well-being of the human being in this world and here after. In spite of that how a human being is ready to hit the axe to his own roots?
 æóãóäú ÃóÙúáóãõ
The meaning of the above term is repeated 15 times in the noble Quran. And this ayat is the last among them which is under discussion. Though outwardly the situation of cruel people is different and this matter possibly may initiate this question that can be the cruellest people consist of more than a group of people. However the minute study in the ayat shows that the total falsification of divine signs returns towards the acts which obstruct the people from every angle. In fact the worst tyranny is to break the people from reaching this programme of well-being.
Then to show that the enemies of truth are unable to eradicate his religion, presented a beautiful comparison and said: they want to blow off the light of mighty God with their mouths but the glorious God made his light perfect, though the unbelievers do not favor it.

íõÑöíÏõæäó áöíõØúÝöÄõæÇ äõæÑó Çááøóåö ÈöÃóÝúæóÇåöåöãú æóÇááøóåõ ãõÊöãøõ äõæÑöåö æóáóæú ßóÑöåó ÇáúßóÇÝöÑõæäó They are similar to those who want to blow off the world illuminating light of sun with their mouth. They are like the bats who feels that if they close their eyes by seeing the sun and sink deeply in the layers of the night’s darkness, they can crash this fountain of light, the sun.
The history of Islam is a live document to prove this as an eyewitness to that great prediction of noble Quran. As since the beginning of the advent of Islam they plotted different kind of conspiracies to destroy it.
Some times by mocking and torturing them,
At times by imposing social and economic restrictions,
Repeatedly by imposing the different wars in the battle field of Ohod, Ahzab and Hunain,
Often by the conspiracies of the hypocrites,
Over and over again by creating the disputes among the rows of the Muslims,
Frequently by the wars of crusade,
At times by occupying their holy lands, the Jerusalem and first “Qibla” direction of Muslims to turn at the time of namaz,
On a regular basis by dividing the great Islamic country into more than forty countries,
Over and over again by changing the line of the Muslim youth from their old Islamic culture,
All the time by means of spreading obscenity and the means of immoral and degrading acts among the youth of the society,
A lot of times exploiting by means of military, politics and economics,
 And sometimes by other means
But as by the will of mighty God this divine light is increasing day by day and the border of Islam, comparative to past, in every period getting more expansive.
The statics shows that the Muslim population of the world is increasing in spite of the joint struggle of the Zionist, Cruciform and the materialists of east. Yeah they continuously endeavor to extinguish the light of Merciful God but the sovereign Lord had a different purpose.
And this is the eternal miracle of the Noble Quran.
It is to be noted that this subject is discussed twice in Honorable Quran with a difference that once it is told

íõÑöíÏõæäó Ãóä íõØúÝöÄõæÇú äõæÑó Çááøåö ÈöÃóÝúæóÇåöåöãú (9:32 ) They want to extinguish God's light with their mouths
 But here it is mentioned:

íõÑöíÏõæäó áöíõØúÝöÄõæÇ äõæÑó Çááøóåö(61:8 ) The first ayat indicated to extinguish without any preface, the second one specifies to put out with the help of preface.
It means that whether they do it with or without the previous intention, they are not able to put out the divine light.
In the last ayat under discussion, to emphasize more it clearly says: He is the one who send his messenger with guidance and the true religion to dominate him over all the religions however the polytheists do not like it.

åõæó ÇáøóÐöí ÃóÑúÓóáó ÑóÓõæáóåõ ÈöÇáúåõÏóì æóÏöíäö ÇáúÍóÞøö áöíõÙúåöÑóåõ Úóáóì ÇáÏøöíäö ßõáøöåö æóáóæú ßóÑöåó ÇáúãõÔúÑößõæäó (61:9 ) The above term, as if it is defining the secret of success and the domination of Islam is for the reason that the nature of guidance and the true religion its success is preserved. Islam and the noble Quran is the divine light. The light where ever it exists, presents its effects and it is the source of success and victory. And the hatred of polytheists and unbelievers is unable to create an obstacle in this way.
Interestingly this ayat with slight changes presented thrice in the honorable Quran. Once in sura e Tauba (ayat 33) and once in sura e Fat’h (ayat 38) and one time in this same sura e Saff.
But one must not forget that this repetition and emphasize was in the period when Islam was not prevailed in the Arabian Peninsula, leave aside the other parts of the world. But the noble Quran stressed upon this matter and the future incidents proved the accuracy of this great prediction. Finally Islam logically and practically progressed and prevailed upon other religions and withdrew the enemies of Islam from the infinite part of the world and replaced them, now it is increasing as well.
Of course the final stage of this advancement, in our belief, with the arrival of hazrat Mehdi alaihis salam (may our souls sacrifice upon him) proved true that these aayaat are a affirmation for that great advent.
About the contents of this ayat, does this expansion means logically or does it means by the help of power? How this ayat is connected with the advent of Imam Mehdi alaihis salam. It is discussed in detail in the sura e Tauba in the book Tafseer e Namuneh.

The incomparable and profitable businessAs it is told in the beginning of the surah that one of the important purposes of this surah is the invitation towards believe in Islam and Jihad (the holy war). The aayaat under discussion too emphasise upon these two elements with elegant examples which inspires towards the divinity and creates encouragement in the heart of the man. The motivation which swears the success of Islam upon all the other religions, indicated in the previous aayaat.
First it said: Those who believed! Do I recommend you on behalf of a business which saves you all from the painful punishment?

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂóãóäõæÇ åóáú ÃóÏõáøõßõãú Úóáóì ÊöÌóÇÑóÉò ÊõäÌöíßõã ãøöäú ÚóÐóÇÈò Ãóáöíãò (61:10 ) Despite the believe in Islam and Jihad (the holy war) which are the compulsory obligations but here it did not narrated in the form of command but in the form of an offer of a business that too blended with the term of everlasting kindness of Almighty God.
Certainly the protection from the painful punishment is among the most important needs of every man. Hence his question is “Do I recommend you of a business which saves you all, from the painful punishment”? It is noteworthy for each and every body.
When it attracted the hearts towards itself, without waiting for the answer began to define that lucrative business and added: and it is to bring faith in Majestic God, his prophet and fight in the divine path my means of your wealth and life.

ÊõÄúãöäõæäó ÈöÇááøóåö æóÑóÓõæáöåö æóÊõÌóÇåöÏõæäó Ýöí ÓóÈöíáö Çááøóåö ÈöÃóãúæóÇáößõãú æóÃóäÝõÓößõãú Certainly the Dominant God does not need this profitable business but all its profit entirely belongs to the believers. Hence in the end it said: this is better for you compared to everything, if you understand it.

Ðóáößõãú ÎóíúÑñ áøóßõãú Åöä ßõäÊõãú ÊóÚúáóãõæäó (61:11 ) Interestingly here the recipients are the believers and called them as: O you who believe!
 íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂóãóäõæÇ
Here it invited them towards two principles of faith and holy war jihad, possibly it is indicating towards the belief, a faith that is only for name sake if it is without any depth which is not sufficient. The deep and pure faith is essential that can become the main stream of the sacrifice, martyrdom and Jihad (the holy war). May be here the account of faith in Generous God and his prophet is only for definition which is mentioned shortly in the beginning of the ayat.
Any way belief in the prophet is not different from the faith in Exalted God. For instance the battle by risking the life and the fight by means of spending wealth, they both are not separate. As all the fights needs the equipment and the tools which only can be provided by means of material help. Some are capable of both kinds of Jihad and certain people are capable of jihad by wealth away from the battle field and sometimes they possess only their life, ready to sacrifice in the way of Islam.
But any way these two struggles must march together to gain the victory and if we see that the battle with wealth is given the first preference, because it is not important than the fight to sacrifice the life but it is accounted as its beginning, as the tools of war can be provided only by the material support.
Here three basic elements from the fundamentals of this great and incomparable business are defined: The buyer is mighty God the seller is the human beings with right believe and the commodity is their wealth and souls and it is the turn of fourth element that is the cost of this business deal.
It says: whenever you do this the merciful God forgive your sins and provide you place in the gardens of Paradise under its trees streams are flowing and dwelling in the neat and clean houses. In the eternal paradise provide your residence and it is a great success.

íóÛúÝöÑú áóßõãú ÐõäõæÈóßõãú æóíõÏúÎöáúßõãú ÌóäøóÇÊò ÊóÌúÑöí ãöä ÊóÍúÊöåóÇ ÇáúÃóäúåóÇÑõ æóãóÓóÇßöäó ØóíøöÈóÉð Ýöí ÌóäøóÇÊö ÚóÏúäò Ðóáößó ÇáúÝóæúÒõ ÇáúÚóÙöíãõ When it comes the turn of rewards of here after, first it goes towards the forgiveness of the sins, as most of the uneasiness of the thought is from the sins the man committed. When the forgiveness is assured then he has no anxiety. This term defines the first divine gift to the martyrs in his way; it is that He forgives all their sins.
Like this manner in the above aayaat mentioned two branches of believe (faith in mighty God and his prophet ‘sava’) and two branches of jihad (the holy war with the help of sacrificing the wealth and the soul) and two branches rewards of hereafter (the forgiveness of the sins and the entering in the paradise) as we will notice the two heavenly gifts are for this world too, defined in the next ayat.
Where it said: The blessing which you like it most and love it, he bestows upon you that is the help of supreme God and the success, near to us.

æóÃõÎúÑóì ÊõÍöÈøõæäóåóÇ äóúÑñ ãøöäó Çááøóåö æóÝóÊúÍñ ÞóÑöíÈñ æóÈóÔøöÑö ÇáúãõÄúãöäöíäó What a blessed and profitable business that is entirely a success, victory, elevation and grace. For this reason it is called as “fauz e azeem” a great success.
Then it greeted the believers about this marvellous transaction, presented them the glad tiding and added: give the believers the glad tiding.
 æóÈóÔøöÑö ÇáúãõÄúãöäöíäó
In a hadees it is narrated: when in the night of lailatal aqabah (the night when the prophet met secretly with a group of the people of Medina near Mecca and attained the pledge of alliance (bai’at) from them). Between the prophet and the Muslims of Medina an agreement was promised. “Abdullah bin Ravaha” expressed: any additional condition if you want you can take in this alliance for your Lord and yourself.
The great prophet peace be upon him said: But for the Lord the term is that you must never bring any partner for Him. And for me, as you defend your souls and property same way defend for me too.
Abdullah said: at its place what will be granted to us?
The prophet peace be upon him replied: Heaven!
Abdullah said: what a profitable deal. We will never turn away from this promise. (We will never cancel it and never accept its cancellation).

The points1-Which is the success near to us (Fat’h qareeb)? In these aayaat the promised victory featured logically as well as practically in the field of the war that repeatedly passed upon the Muslims.
Which is the victory that is called (Fat’h qareeb)? The interpreters guessed it in many ways; most of them defined it as the victory of Mecca and some of them defined the victory of Mecca as well as a part of Iran and Rome and some narrated it the total Islamic conquests which was achieved in a short period after bringing faith and Jihad of Muslims.
As the addressees are not only the companions and supporters of prophet but the entire believers in the extent of history were addressed in this manner and the ayat mentioned below has a vast meaning.

äóúÑñ ãøöäó Çááøóåö æóÝóÊúÍñ ÞóÑöíÈñ æóÈóÔøöÑö ÇáúãõÄúãöäöíäó And it is a glad tiding even for those as well at the time of the victory of Mecca when these ayat descended it is a clear proof regarding the conquest of the holy land Mecca.
2-What is masakin tayyaba “the agreeable and pleasant houses”?
Among the heavenly affluences here specifically emphasized upon the neat and affluent houses that too in the gardens of paradise. It is for the reason that the basic condition for the comfort and peace of man is the means of his residence. That too, a neat house and clean from entire inner and outer uncleanness where a human being can rest safely in peace.
Ragib defines in mafridat states: the real meaning of tayyib is the thing that one by paying attention to it can enjoy it outwardly and inwardly and this is the complete meaning which includes the favourable conditions of a house.
It is notable that in the noble Quran there are three things which are the source of the peace and tranquillity that is:

The darkness of nightAl-An'am (The Cattle)

æóÌóÚóáó Çááøóíúáó ÓóßóäðÇ (6:96 ) And has made the night for rest
 The residential houses:
 An-Nahl (The Bee)

æóÇááøåõ ÌóÚóáó áóßõã ãøöä ÈõíõæÊößõãú ÓóßóäðÇ (16:80 ) And Allah has made for you from your homes a place of rest
 And whole heartedly faithful spouse:
 Ar-Rum (The Romans)

  æóãöäú ÂíóÇÊöåö Ãóäú ÎóáóÞó áóßõã ãøöäú ÃóäÝõÓößõãú ÃóÒúæóÇÌðÇ áøöÊóÓúßõäõæÇ ÅöáóíúåóÇ (30:21  ) And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them;

The world is the profit-creating abode of holy saintsIn the Nahjul Balagha we read, hazrat Ali alaihis salam told a big headed man, idiomatically called “the one who carefully purifies his praying mat” as he was continuously reproaching the world, maula Ali A.S replied him and expressed: you are wrong, this world is an immense treasure for those who are awakened and well aware. And then explained on this subject such that: the world is a profit creating place of Benevolent God’s friends.
Therefore, if at one place the world is compared to the field of hereafter and here it is paralleled to the profit creating abode where the man receives the capital from the supreme God and sells him the same thing back in a very high cost. He receives the highest prize in the place of a cheap thing.
Basically the term business that too a profitable business is for stimulating the most important motivation in man, a motivation to gain profit and protect against losses As this divine transaction in not only profitable but it wards off the painful punishment too.
In the same manner in the ayat 111 of sura e Taubeh it is mentioned as well:
 At-Tauba (The Repentance)

ÝóÅöä ÊóÇÈõæÇú æóÃóÞóÇãõæÇú ÇáøóáÇóÉó æóÂÊóæõÇú ÇáÒøóßóÇÉó ÝóÅöÎúæóÇäõßõãú Ýöí ÇáÏøöíäö æóäõÝóøöáõ ÇáÂíóÇÊö áöÞóæúãò íóÚúáóãõæäó (9:11 ) But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah , (the poor rate) then they are your brothers in religion; and We explain the verses for the people who know.

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂóãóäõæÇ ßõæäæÇ ÃóäóÇÑó Çááøóåö ßóãóÇ ÞóÇáó ÚöíÓóì ÇÈúäõ ãóÑúíóãó áöáúÍóæóÇÑöíøöíäó ãóäú ÃóäóÇÑöí Åöáóì Çááøóåö ÞóÇáó ÇáúÍóæóÇÑöíøõæäó äóÍúäõ ÃóäóÇÑõ Çááøóåö ÝóÂóãóäóÊ ØøóÇÆöÝóÉñ ãøöä Èóäöí ÅöÓúÑóÇÆöíáó æóßóÝóÑóÊ ØøóÇÆöÝóÉñ ÝóÃóíøóÏúäóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂóãóäõæÇ Úóáóì ÚóÏõæøöåöãú ÝóÃóúÈóÍõæÇ ÙóÇåöÑöíäó (61:14) O you, who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah." Then a group of the Children of Israel believed and a group disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became uppermost.

DefinitionBe like havariyun (desciples of hazrat Isa (Jesus) alaihis salam)
In this ayat which is the last ayat of Sura e Saff once again emphasised upon the matter of jihad “the holy war” which establish the main pivot of the sura but persuaded this matter in a different way and presented the better matters about the heaven and heavenly blessings and expressed: O those who acquired faith, be the supporters of Mighty Allah”.

íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂóãóäõæÇ ßõæäæÇ ÃóäóÇÑó Çááøóåö Yeah the supporters of Allah, the almighty god from whom all the sources of power starts and returns back to him. The supreme God whose power is unending and unconquerable and here surprisingly He called his creation, the human beings for help and this is an exclusive honour though its meaning is the same, supporting the prophet ‘peace be upon him’ and his religion Islam though the excellent kindness lies in it.
Then points towards an ancient example so that they can understand this path which has not been without the traveller and adds: as the son of Maryam ‘alaihumus salam’ told his supporters: who is my supporter in the way of almighty God?

ßóãóÇ ÞóÇáó ÚöíÓóì ÇÈúäõ ãóÑúíóãó áöáúÍóæóÇÑöíøöíäó ãóäú ÃóäóÇÑöí Åöáóì Çááøóåö The companions replied in extreme respect and said: we are the supporters of almighty God.

ÝóÂóãóäóÊ ØøóÇÆöÝóÉñ ãøöä Èóäöí ÅöÓúÑóÇÆöíáó æóßóÝóÑóÊ ØøóÇÆöÝóÉñ Here our help and aid came to support them “we empowered them against the enemy who brought faith in us and finally conquered over them”.

Same way as the havariyun ‘the supporters of benevolent God’ conquered upon the enemies, you too will be victorious and honoured in this world and hereafter.
This matter was not only concerned the prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions who were adherents of truth and continuously in struggle with the followers of falsehood and they are the supporters of the Majestic God and finally they achieve the victory.
In every vein there is sweet and salty water
Increasing in the creatures until the blow of trumpet
 (Announcement of judgment day)

 The point:Who are the havariyun?
In the honourable Quran the companions of hazrat Isa alaihis salam (Christ) are mentioned five times, wherein two times it is defined in this same sura. This term indicating the twelve specific companions of Isa A.S such as their name is stated in the bible of Mata and Luqa.
We declared it previously also that this term had been taken from the mother word ‘hur’ that means to wash and make silvery white. As they possessed the pure hearts and contented souls and always trying to clean their hearts and souls and others as well.
In some of the narrations it is revealed that Isa Masih A.S send each of them as his representative to the different part of the world. They were devoted, sacrificing, fighters of holy war, soldiers and wholeheartedly loving the Christ (Isa Masih a.s).
But in the narrations of the Christians it is defined that one of them by the name Yahuda askharyuthi at last betrayed the Christ (Isa Masih a.s).
In this matter there are more descriptions in the definition of the 52 ayat of sura Aale Imran
In a hadis it is described that the great prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) when met in the Aqabeh with a group of people who came to pledge the oath of alliance to him and said: You select twelve people among you and introduce them to me so that they be duty-bound representative of their people, same as the havariyun of Isa Masih a.s Ibn Maryam a.s. this as well showing the important status of those magnanimous people.
O Majestic God! Make us successful in this profitable transaction which you provided for your dedicated saintly people to attain it and acquire the abundance of its benefits.
O Provider God! Make unstable those who create the differences and dispersion in the rows of Muslims.
O Lord! Your religion had never been without the supporters and dedicated assistants. Bless us this honour to be a part of this group of people.
Ameen, O Allah! The Provider of the universe
