Wali ul Asr (A.S.) School, Toronto, Canada
Asr School provides an environment where students do not have to choose between becoming practicing Muslims, successful professionals and responsible Canadian Citizens.
Wali ul Asr School develops future Muslim leaders who excel religiously, academically and in extracurricular activities, allowing them to integrate in the society as leaders and ambassadors rather than followers who become merged and lost.
The School’s Objectives
To fulfill its mission, Wali ul Asr School is committed to meeting the following key objectives:
1. To create an Islamic environment where students can learn to lead their lives according to the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the Ahlul Bayt (AS).
2. To promote a high level of academic excellence by developing student character and leadership skills.
3. To prepare students to lead an integrated life with the larger Canadian society by becoming ambassadors of Islam in their professions.
4. To teach the Islamic values of good manners, mutual respect, peace, kindness, love and tolerance so that they become role models in the global community.
5. To encourage participation in extra-curricular activities for the development of a well-rounded student personality.
The School’s Philosophy
At Wali ul Asr we believe that children and youth can develop into great leaders who become ambassadors of our Islamic faith through excellence in their character, academics and personality. It is important that Muslim children and youth develop a strong foundation and sense of pride of their Islamic heritage. At Wali ul Asr, Islamic ideals and etiquette pervade the atmosphere of the classrooms through stories, hands-on activities, celebration of Islamic holidays and teachers acting as role models inside and outside the classrooms. In addition, we drive students to excel in languages, mathematics and science.
The School’s Vision
It is our vision that students graduating from Wali ul Asr School will:
■ Have a clear moral compass based on the teachings of Ahlul Bayt (AS) and use it for life-long decision making.
■ Be fluent in English, Arabic and French.
■ Have excellent mathematical skills and scientific knowledge.
■ Have great personality traits including strong leadership and communication skills.
■ Be responsible citizens who will become a source of pride for our community and ambassadors of our faith.
We have concrete programs to achieve the above-mentioned objectives. Our teaching philosophy promotes experimentation, exploration and discovery and we engage in activities that flourish the innate leadership qualities. We believe that academic excellence is best achieved through critical thinking, problem solving, diligence, actionable instructions and strong communication skills. Growth in social skills through positive peer and adult interaction helps children develop their self-esteem and a strong sense of identity.
The concept of exposing children to Haraam experiences at an early age so that they may be able to deal with Haraam in the future is not an Islamic way of raising children. Solidifying a child’s foundation and concepts through the teachings of Ahlul Bayt (AS) is the Islamic recommendation for raising children as outlined in the hadiths of the Ahlul Bayt (AS) and the instructions of our respectable Marajee’.
Wali ul Asr is a federal non-profit organization that was registered in October 2007 and opened its doors to students in September 2008. We started with an initial capital of $150,000 that was gathered from individuals who believed in investing in our future generation. The school was started with 50 students from JK to grade 5 and with the commitment that the school will provide quality education in a religious environment. The Wali ul Asr team consisted of 3 directors, 10 volunteers and 6 employees. The directors took a religious oath never to benefit from the project personally and execute their duties purely for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and His Hujjat (ATFS).
By the grace of Allah (SWT), Wali ul Asr has achieved significant milestones in the areas of academic excellence, religious training and personality development. The school has over 160 students from JK to grade 9 and currently has waiting lists on multiple classes due to limitation of space in the current building. We are a $450,000 organization today and were able to break even within four years of operations.
Wali ul Asr students appeared in the standardized provincial examination in Mathematics and English and performed better than the majority of the schools in the area. They also participated in regional competitions and won multiple awards. Our parents’ satisfaction, measured through anonymous surveys, is over 97%. Wali ul Asr also organized some of the largest and most successful events ever held by any Shia organization in Canada. The Wali ul Asr team today consists of 3 directors, 3 executive body members, 5 board of advisor members, 10 Wali ul Asr Educational Development Program (WEDP) office holders, 18 employees and over 50 youth volunteers.
High School is a critical time for students as they face significant peer pressure and have a high chance of going astray. The Shia community in Canada has lost a large number of youths in this age group resulting in significant pain for their families and depriving the community of its future leadership potential.
Wali ul Asr will open the first Shia High School program in September 2012 in the existing building. We will offer a quality program including Advanced Placement (AP) courses in an environment where students can focus on learning. We plan to move to a new building by September 2013 Insha Allah. The total cost of the project is $4.5 million and we need to raise $2.5 million as our projections and forecasts show that we can afford the financing costs for a loan of $2 million.
Various teams at Wali ul Asr have been working for over a year with the Ministry of Education and are expecting to receive the necessary permits by August 2012 Insha Allah. Our curriculum team, comprising of three high school OCT certified Shia teachers have developed a curriculum that exceeds the provincial standards.
Wali ul Asr’s management team consists of successful professionals who have taken an oath of never using the project for any personal benefit and have committed themselves for the sake of our Imam (ATFS) to develop the future leaders for our community. In the past three years, we have defied all odds and have met and exceeded expectations and milestones. In addition to providing an excellent program to younger children, we have also been able to engage the youths through unique events like the Muslim Carnival and Inter-faith Hussein (AS) day, which were driven and managed by the youth volunteers and attended by thousands of people. The Wali ul Asr team has proven that it can deliver on its commitments and is now looking for the community to step-up and help us in establishing the first Shia High School.
Other communities in Canada have successfully put an educational infrastructure that has resulted in their childrens’ integration with the Canadian society in leadership roles while retaining their core values. It is high time that we join hands and invest in our youths. You will Insha Allah get the thawab of every good decision made by Wali ul Asr graduates and youth volunteers throughout their lives.
