Hazrat Ayatullah al-Uzma Allamah Zanjani"
Hazrat Ayatullah al-Uzma Sayyid Ezuddin Husaini Zanjani, the Grand Marja of the Shi'ites in the World is the son of the divine gnostic late Ayatullah al-Uzma Agha Mirza Mahmud Imam Juma(May Allah sanctify his soul) and was born in Zanjan in 1921 in a family of knowledge and religious learning. He was educated under the guardianship of his father and successfully accomplished the elementary and secondary courses as well as part of advanced courses in Islamic jurisprudence near his reverend father and late Ayatollah Shaykh Husain Din Muhammadi. He also studied under the late Agha Shaykh Abd al-Karim Zanjani who was one of the leading students of Akhund Khurasani, the author of the famous book "Kifayah al-Usul." At the same time he also finished the primary and secondary grades of the modern school in Zanjan. He left for the holy city of Qum at the age of 21 years to continue his higher studies. After his arrival in Qum he attended the classes in advanced courses in jurisprudence and its principles lectured by Hadrat Ayatollah al-Uzma Haj Sayyid Muhammad Hujjat Kuh Kamarei and at the same time he also attended the classes of Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Sadr al-Din Sadr in advanced learning in jurisprudence and its principles. After the residence of Ayatollah al-Uzma Brujerdi in Qum he gained fully from his classes in jurisprudence and its principles.
He exclusively used to attend the classes of Imam Khomeini (R.A.) and late Ayatollah al-Uzma Haj Sayyid Ahmad Khansari. In this way he attained the highest stages of knowledge and ijtehad (deducting the Islamic laws) and also mastered the Hikmat–i Muta'aliyah (the transcendental wisdom) of Mulla Sadra and learned this wisdom from the great philosopher and the famous exegetist of the Holy Qur'an, Allama Tabataba'i and Ayatollah al-Uzma Imam Khomeini (R.A.) and the famous philosopher Hadrat Ayatollah al-Uzma Haj Shaykh Mahdi Mazandarani (R.A.). Ayatollah al-Uzma Zanjani was highly regarded and respected by his honorable professors. His late professor Allama Tabataba'i in his last television interview introduced Ayatollah al-Uzma Zanjani as one of the five leading philosophers who can be fully trusted in the Islamic philosophy.
Ayatollah al-Uzma Zanjani after a long period of completing higher education in the Qum's Islamic seminary left for Iraq for the pilgrimage of the holy shrines of Amir al-Muminin Ali (A.S.) in Najaf-i Ashraf and Imam Husain (A.S.) in the Karbala. During his period of
stay in the holy city of Najaf-i Ashraf he attended the classes of Ayatollah al-Uzma Haj Sayyid Abdul Hadi Shirazi, Ayatollah al-Uzma Hakeem and Ayatollah al-Uzma Khoe. But due to the serious illness of his father he left Najaf and returned to Iran and by his reverend father's order he took over the management of the Islamic seminary and the Jameh Mosque in Zanjan and also started lecturing Islamic sciences in his birth place Zanjan.
Ayatollah al-Uzma Zanjani was one of the first persons to support Imam Khomeini's (R.A.) leadership and in the year 1963 he was arrested by the former Shah's regime along with leading Ulama like Shaheed Mutahhari, Shaheed Hasheminejad, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, Shaykh Husain Lankarani and late Agha Falsafi. During the nights of Qadr in the month of Ramadan of the year 1968, he severely condemned all those persons who were trying to impose immodesty among the Iranian women, which resulted in Savak (former Shah's secret intelligence agents) persecuting him. In the year 1971, after Shah's return from the OPEC meeting, he out rightly criticized Shah in his speech and due to his continued opposition to the anti-Islamic policies of Shah, he was exiled and interned in the holy city of Mashhad. After the glorious victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979, he was invited by Imam Khomeini (R.A.) to lead the Friday prayers in Zanjan and act as his representative in the Zanjan province. During that period he survived an assassination attempt and decided to move to the holy city of Mashhad and reside near the precincts of the sacred shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.).
At present Ayatollah al-Uzma Zanjani is considered as one of the Grand Marja and leading professors in the Mashhad's Islamic seminary. He teaches advanced courses in Islamic jurisprudence and its principles as well as exegesis of the Holy Quran to the students of Islamic seminary in the Imam Sadiq(A.S.) Islamic seminary. Ayatollah al-Uzma Zanjani is also a prolific writer and some of his famous works are entitled, Exposition of the Sermon of Hadrat Zahra (A.S.)" in two volumes, Interpretation of the Surah al-Hamd", "The Ways to Salvation", "Explanation of the Ziarat-i Ashura", "The Rules of the Hajj Pilgrimage" and "Majma al-Masail"(the Practical Laws of Islam) and also a book in Arabic entitled " The Criteria of Polytheism in the Holy Qur'an", which was published in Beirut, Lebanon.
